I hear ya Paul... We have a fairly young group in OK with several guys in their 30s & 40s and one guy in his 20s and me at 18... But I know we are not normal...

I don't see how my age is relevant in this situation.... I was merely pointing out ways that I would hope members of this region would try to get an answer if someone didn't get back to them in email...
And obviously I am not the normal 18yr old... If I hadn't said that you would have never known... There is a reason I can interact well with people way older than myself and not well with people of my own age... I handle things in a very adult and professional manner... |

I am not arguing that all I am saying is you have no idea what the club was like when I started with my car it had value, now 20 years later it has no value, if I have to chase guys down to get an answer to a simple question, as you have guessed I got to ask several people that question none with an answer and all said I needed to talk to the tech adviser. There was alot of posturing to get me to not quit since I was one of the senior members in the region and even got a few calls and emails to that effect but no answer to my question.

I have been a member since I bought my 911.
I maintain my membership so that I get a discount on the track days. My local group used to be pretty good, and I attended regularly for several years. The last meeting I attended was in 2008. Shortly after that I told them to take me off both the local and the regional e-mailing lists. The details can be summed up in one word: [deleted] The demographic is always changing in PCA. And like the OPs comment about the magazine, it became apparent one day that my car was too old to fit in with the group as it changed. Maybe we should create a new club: "PCA Classic" {edit: I deleted my disparaging remark. No need to play that game.}

I have some very mixed feelings about the club! I've been a Porsche owner since 1968, and a club member for over 20. Most of my best friends are people that I have met at club functions. Some friends no longer own their Porsche, and we are STILL friends! I've been on the board, sponsored club functions, and helped double the membership of my local region over the years.
BUT......... I got so disgusted with PCA at the Hershey Parade I not only did not renew, I lit my membership card on fire! At the time I had a 55 356 that I entered in Full Concours. I show up at the Parade, and I'm instructed to put my trailer in the dirt lot a mile from the Hotel. I tried to make them understand that I was FULL CONCOURS and did not want to go anywhere near a dirt lot. Deaf ears. Here comes a brand new 997 Turbo and " Oh my, park it right here at the front door". I went to the dirt lot and there were other 356 people standing around in disbelief that they were also told to park here. Then it gets better......I'm at the Concours, performance modified class, with my 356 about to be judged and next to me is a full on race 934, in the same class. This car should have been in another class, like the Historic class. The Judges chose to not tell the owner that he was disqualified for being in the wrong class and continued to judge our cars. Again, we're not talking wash & shine, this is big time Full Concours. Blatant favortism. And NO, not sour grapes. Guess what, the 934 won! This whole episode was nothing new. Been happening to 356ers for years. Thats why 356 people have been abandoning PCA and not coming back. PCA has always had their nose up PCNA's butt and PCNA has openly stated that they were not interested in 356 owners. They don't buy the parts at Porsche dealerships. The whole Parade, which was hyped to the max because it was the 50th anniversary was very disapointing. Not because I didn't win (I won the year before) just because the SPIRIT of the club is not like it used to be. It's all about the new cars or you are just old news......or 356s.

Not every chapter is as you describe. Around here the old cars are respected. In fact, most of us would rather see an older car, as fewer of them are getting driven nowdays. Several 356's have been bought by members in the last 2 years, including a couple Speedsters. We enjoy looking at those as much as a Carrera GT. I'm finishing the restoration of a 914-6. After that will be a hot rod Carrera 3.0, then a 1972 911T. Another member just built a sort of R-gruppe backdate on a 911 SC.
There's no pecking order. We just like cars. At our weekly breakfast, there will be half a dozen interesting cars that are not Porsches. It changes every week. JR |

How much has the leased P-car members effected the club? I've heard that they are less than "equal" to other members. Your thoughts...

Funny, I'm an older guy ( now 51 ) and I'm still in the same old running club, for years now. Have gone from an "Open runner" to a "Master runner" and now, being past 50, a "Senior runner". At events & races, it seems like all of us "Seniors" are being sent to the "Dirt lot, a mile away to park", too.

Well,
I'm 57 and I love my stock 1988 Carrera 911 Cabrio. It has stock 15k on it and I am proud. I don't need to be an owner of a new Porsche (don't like them) and have to owe the bank money for it. The original 911 body is timeless as is the 356. I have never been to a meeting but I have been to a few concours and they wouldn't even let me park my car near (I don't have a nick in the paint) the others and it was 90+ degrees and they wouldn't sell me a beverage for any of my family. The beverages were for paid entry cars. I showed my PCA card and told them that I have been a member over 25 years, but I was talking to deaf ears. We had to leave, as we were thirsty. I am a member of the vintage Jaguar club and during most shows they sell beverages & food and give free water, if it is that hot outside to anyone. As previously stated, the PCA seems to care about new sales & cars over our older ones. Years ago they catered to the older cars too. Jack |
