No doubt, most of our early complaints will be fixed in Gen 2 and Gen 3, except for the battery issue.

I think I'm going to slap an apple logo on the stack of old Fujitsu's I have...

lendaddy 01-27-2010 12:22 PM

What's best is that it's just like the iPod Touch only much less convenient to carry with you, optional iAnchor is unfortunately extra.

enzo1 01-27-2010 12:33 PM

Have you guys actually looked at it! the keyboard is "bigger". It has more screen space, that changes things, oh damn , it doesn't have a cup holder, man thats a deal breaker

red-beard 01-27-2010 12:50 PM

Yes, we have. We looked at the specs, and like the Apple TV, we are wondering about it.

What do YOU think is great about it? Unless you're being sarcastic. Sarcastic text is supposed to be green...

I think the cupholder part was sarcastic but the rest was just ejaculate. In every sense of the word.

I thought the challenge in the electronics world was to make things smaller while retaining usability, not the opposite way around.

It is like watching little kids playing soccer, kicking the ball into the wrong goal. "You're going the wrong way!!!!!"

I say this while typing on my newer Imac and listening to my Ipod touch.

Speedy:)

Boy, that sounds a lot like Windoz! :)

I think its an awesome toy, but at this point I have no need for something in the middle of smartphone and laptop. Maybe if it had more memory and a couple of usb ports it would be something to consider, but it just costs too much money relative to the amount of features. I would rather get an iPhone or a newer iPod and make due with that for web browsing during the few times that I am without my laptop.

Plus, if I am going to drop $500, I am getting some new ski boots, not 2nd laptop.

Or maybe a Spoon, or some ammo?

I don't think there's a bigger "app" or any other magic to this machine other than its obvious purpose....

...reading text.

Okay, I've thought about the iPad for a bit more now. In particular, about what I'd use it for and where.

At home, we mostly use the MacBook and iMac about 3/4 of the time for recreation like web-surfing, email, watching DVDs, watching Youtube/Hulu/etc, casual games, and about 1/4 of the time for work-like stuff like homework, bills, and actual job work.

The iPad could do all the recreation stuff, except playing DVD movies - well, I could probably just stream them from Netflix instead of getting the physical DVDs. Which is a pretty big "except". Some it would do a bit better than the Macs (longer battery life), some it would a bit be worse (email).

I'm not sure how well it would do on the work stuff. partly because of no physical keyboard, but also partly because you'd want multi-tasking (e.g. daughter chats w/ friends as they work on a Google Doc together). I can't tell how the iPad handles multitasking, so I'll assume "not".

And there's one thing neither of the Macs do well, which is reading newspapers and magazines. I think the iPad would do this pretty well. (And I figured out that switching my print newspapers and newsmagazines to electronic would save appx $300/yr).

So, for about 1/2 the price of the cheapest iBook, the iPad will do about 3/4 of what that iBook will do, plus save me $300/yr in print subscriptions.

Away from home - I dunno. I travel with a work laptop anyway, so no need or space for any sort of personal computing device except my iPhone. Otherwise, I could maybe see carrying an iPad as a super-light super-slim notebook replacement with great battery life - but with no optical drive.

I just watched the video on Apple's site. Seeing it in action is a lot more impressive than the specs would lead you to believe.

The Apple TV is an awesome product if you know how to use it. I have 200+ movies that I stream from my Mac to my Apple TV.

I am getting it as soon as they can mail me one (Whenever that is).

Anyone want to buy a Dell Mini 9???

I was an Apple hater like many people on here until I bought an Iphone.....3 Ipod Touches, Apple TV, Time Capsule and a 24" iMac and I am hooked on the product!

enzo1 01-27-2010 03:40 PM

Dead serious, I think the conventional keyboard is becoming a terribly limiting interface. I'm a pretty good typist (I've never clocked myself but I bet I'm well over 100wpm) and I can still take notes with pen&paper a lot faster than I can type.

The QWERTY keyboard sucks.

Mice/mouses/whatever are greatly inferior to the touch-screen interfaces of the iPhone or Droid phones you see out there today. Wait until stuff starts being represented in virtual 3D with apps stored on different facets of cubes and other objects that you can then rotate, move off to the side, etc. You've seen this kind of stuff conceptualized as "virtual reality" but the truth is you don't need funky goggles/gloves/etc. to use it and benefit from it. A good 2D representation of 3D objects suffices if modeled correctly.

For sketching/note-taking, a keyboard is VASTLY inferior to a good old fashioned notepad. This device gets a lot closer to that, while simultaneously providing the benefit of web-based communication and the power of computer applications. Very useful, potentially, and without the burden of a keyboard. I very much like it.

The non-replaceable battery is a deal-breaker. Were it not for that, I'd seriously put this on my "get" list.

enzo1 01-27-2010 05:20 PM

LMAO thats a funny video! Free advertising is when you know your iconic! The keyboard is history when they get voice activation working better!

gprsh924 01-27-2010 06:12 PM

You are unique Jeff. I can probably write about as fast as I can type, but it is nowhere near legible enough to try and study for exams off of. My typing I can always read.
