2012 and Solar flares

So we've all heard about this 2012 thing... blah blah. I pretty much poo poo'd the whole Mayan Calendar thing. But I recently saw a show on 2012 with regards to the solar flares and apparently there's some science to this. From what I've read, the sun goes through cycles and the next major cycle of flares is predicted to occur anywhere from now until 2012. I read this on the NASA.gov site... a pretty credible source. (just google search "2012" and "solar" and the NASA article will come up).

I guess a worse case scenario would be the loss of all electronics (cell phones, landline phones, electricity, etc) for anywhere from a few days to a few months or maybe even a few years... for the entire country and beyond! ....boy would that suck.

But before I go and dig a bunker to crawl in, I have to remember that scientists can't even predict with much accuracy if it's going to snow or not, so how can they predict that the massive ball of burning hydrogen in the sky will throw off a major flare in 2012?

This is probably a repeat topic, and if so... sorry.

Interesting that you listed phones first.

If this happened, phones would be the least of your/our problems.

If the electrical grid goes out, you/we won't even have fresh water because all pumping and water purifying would come to a halt.

You know what it's like when your power goes out... winter or summer, it's nothing to sneeze at.

Also, no vehicles with electronic ignition would work.

It would be every man for himself. "Zombie time" for sure.

Well, if the sun has a coronal mass ejection that's really severe, I guess it could just strip away our atmosphere. I wonder how deep a bunker you'd need to survive that.

Look up the bunker at Denver Int'l Airport. Those people seem to have figured it out! For some reason, I don't think I'll get an invite.

Here's an excerpt from an article talking about a flare from 2003 and comparing it to past flares.

SPACE.com -- Major Solar Storm Begins Onslaught of Earth
Quote:
Engineers can put some satellites into hibernation modes and reduce the operations of others to reduce the risk of electrical disruption. The storm, however, can swell Earth's upper atmosphere, creating drag that can pull a satellite out of orbit.

Power grid operators arrange for less switching and fewer large-scale power swaps.

The space storm is intrinsically stronger than one on March 6, 1989 that tripped a power grid in Quebec, Canada.

Lesser storms have caused satellite problems. In 1997, an AT&T Telestar 401 satellite used to broadcast television shows from networks to local affiliates was knocked out during a solar storm. In May 1998 a solar blast disabled PanAmSat's Galaxy IV. Among the casualties: automated teller machines; gas station credit card handling services; 80 percent of all pagers in the United States; news wire service feeds; CNN's airport network; and some airline weather tracking

Well, since the sun is in a quiet phase right now, low sunspot activity, there are less solar storms. The Ham bands rely on an ionized atmosphere, and this cycle was really weak.

Fun stuff...

DA: Now, you mentioned that underneath this airport it goes down many levels. Does the fact that all these underground levels are there have something to do with why it took so long for this airport to open?

AC: Well, the gentleman that I was dealing with, Phil Schneider, said that during the last year of construction they were connecting the underground airport system to the deep underground base. He told me that there was at least an eight- level deep underground base there, and that there was a 4.5 square mile underground city and an 88.5 square-mile base underneath the airport. It is very unusual that they would allot a 50 square-mile area on the surface at which to locate an airport in the middle of nowhere unless they really planned to use it for something very unusual later.

Let's not forget that the earth's axis shifted a few degrees because of the Chile earthquake. The sky is falling for sure...

I think there's a good chance these murals would scare the crap out of my kids. This is why I force their nanny to fly in coach, on a separate plane, with them while I'm getting drunk on champagne and hitting on flight attendants in business class.
Okay, that's a strange airport.

Ex-Governor Jessie Ventura (kind of nuts) featured his "Conspiracy" T.V. show on 2012 several weeks ago. Okay, so the guy talks to NASA engineers about the "geosphere degradation", solar flare atmosphereic impact, and the possibilities, etc, etc, etc. So the Gov. takes it a step further and talks to "2012 survival experts" and he meets an architect who bought into the old missle silos in the midwest and their present day construction for "survivable condo's" for the wealthy. The abandoned silos were impressive. The guy tells the Gov, "hey the biggest shelter is being built under an airport". So Jessie heads over to Denver's new airport and goes nuts reading the corner stone dedication monument inside the airport thats states, "NEW WORLD AIRPORT COMMISSION". Say what? Suddenly the huge wall murals at Denver are satanic, terrifying and no less than weird! Whats with gargoyles sitting in suitcases mounted around the airport anyways? The Gov's buddies claim that a 300,000 square foot shelter exists under or proximal to the airport and that massive tunneling has been done between the airport and Cheyenne Mountain. The conspiracy widens as the "experts" claim the government has been building survival bunkers all over the country for the last several years. So thats where the stimulus money is really going!

You can take this all the way to crystal skulls, galactic alignment, alien invasion and the brilliance of the Mayan people to Nostordamus, Bible Codes, asteroids and of course Jessie Ventura. Add hollywoods addition to promoting the paranoia (2012 and Knowing) and you have a wave of wonderment, excitement and apprehension, but wow are we fascinated with our own destruction.

As a kid, I used to look at LIFE and LOOK magazines as they featured, "How to build a shelter in your basement" to survive a nuclear attack. Brick by brick construction instructions, ventilation, survival rationing, etc. Pretty scarey stuff back then. It was right in front of you...Build or Die!

I find the whole 2012 thing pretty interesting.

There's two problems with this.

1) The solar activity is should peak in 2013 or 2014, not 2012

2) The Sun is strangely quiet, any activity at all is down by over 50% in both frequency and inensity, which means that in both 2012 and 2013, the solar flare activity should be far LESS than it was in 2000/2001, the last peak of activity.

No one freaked out then, so no one should freak out now.

Its not like there's a set date or anything... just a range over a few years when the "experts" are expecting a solar storm. i think it just brings to light (no pun intended) the vulnerability of our entire way of life. It doesn't seem to out of the realm that a solar flare could knock out power for some length of time to a large area. As some "experts" said, it's happened before, but we just didn't have the technology at the time for it to harm anything. Things are a bit different now.

As far as Denver Int'l Airport goes, there's some weird stuff there. Supposedly the generators on the surface are WAY bigger and provide WAY more power than is needed for just an airport. Enough for, say, an underground city. Just a lot of odd things that when you add them up, you've got to think there's some other agenda there. Where there's smoke there's fire!

What does Ted Danson say? That would be the definitive answer.
