Good IP cameras/home security, anyone ?
Here's the setup I'd like, hopefully someone here has some sort of knowledge on this that can save me from a bad purchase...
I'd like to setup 2 or 3 IP cameras at home, 2 inside one outside for instance... Ideally, i'd like to be able to access them via a secure webpage, but not necessarily have a server at home dedicated to that - just the IP cam talking to my router wirelessly and me querying the camera from anywhere.... So the camera itself has gotta have good firmware in it to host and serve the feed and maybe talk to its sisters to consolidate the display on one page.... Realistic or not? Also, I wouldn'f mind if one of the inside cams was motion sensitive and emailed me a snapshot of what moved... Asking too much now ? also not sure what the best way to power those is, ugly wires or batteries... it would be great if it could use an existing can light, for instance, for power... Looking for ideas here, and I'd like to avoid having a computer on all day just for this, if at all possible... I can google the above, of course, I would prefer some hands on experience from a board member.. Thx ! Last edited by Deschodt; 03-15-2010 at 11:16 AM.. |

Those cameras exist without the need for a server.
Home routers even accomodate for them tese days. Not sure about consolidating the feed to one page but that;s likely something you can build yourself fairly quickly. Just need to put together a page with multiple "windows to pull the feeds into. Uless you have a static IP from your provider get a freebie account from DynDNS or no-ip. Most home routers support DynDNS accounts out of the box.

I have them setup in my homes. They work beautifully. Panasonic provides a free web-based program that allows you to login and control the cameras.
Each camera has a built-in webserver. Here ya go: Panasonic BL-C131A

What kind of money are we talking about for a system like the above?

The wireless cameras are about $300 each. You can get the wired versions for around $150. If you want 3 cameras, you're looking at the price of the 3 cameras, plus your standard wireless router and internet connection.

Thanks! This is something that you could start out with one or two then expand as funds allow. Already have the WiFi network and internet connection, so no further cost there.
Am not traveling as much as I was at one time (staying gone for 2-3 months at a time two years ago) but still would be nice to have "an eye on the place" while I am gone. Joe

Yep, they do a great job for that. I can watch my house & even check out how much snow is outside. Pretty cool to see the weather when you're 1200 miles away
![]() I even have a robot in one of the houses that I can control via the internet. I can steer it around, turn on its headlight, etc. It even has a microphone to listen. Stuff is getting really advanced these days.

I had my eye on a dummy Claymore on eBay, which I wanted to put in front of my front door and run some wires near the doorbell with a flashing LED. It went for around $279.

Problem is that most criminals are too stupid to know what a claymore is, and would just walk past it. You can get them that plug into a trailer hitch for about $40 or a bit less at gun shows.

many of these cameras have low res., poor contrast and do not function in low light levels (like at night, or in street light levels of illumination).
If anybody knows of some that DO (for a reasonable price) - please post details. |
