Oh Haha 04-18-2010 06:09 PM

Scale models---$20.00 now?!!!!!!!!

Man, when did they become so expensive? These were plain old Monogram models.

I wasn't looking to buy but I couldn't believe the price. They used to be under $10.00.

This was at a KMart, BTW.

on2wheels52 04-18-2010 07:00 PM

I thought $1.00 was a lot when I was looking at them.

VINMAN 04-18-2010 07:05 PM

I remember buying my first model. It was Don Prudomes Snake funny car back in the early 70's. I think it was under $4.00 at Woolworths

Model prices are out of control these days. Try buying a resin car kit. Or any military model. your head will spin at the prices.

Super_Dave_D 04-18-2010 07:17 PM

Its nothing to spend 50 bucks on a good kit but then again, they are NOTHING like they used to be. I did this one last year.

AMT, MPC and Johans used to be $2.00 when I was building them and gas was about $1.00/gal. I'm gettin' old.

tcar 04-18-2010 07:28 PM

Super, I think 50 is a pretty good deal for that... of course, your paint 'makes' it.

Tiger? I don't know much about tanks, but I know it's not a Ferdinand (Elephant).

look 171 04-18-2010 10:35 PM

That Gun is steel on that Tiger 1 in the second pic? What scale is that and is it Tamya? I am looking for an old Tamya tank (I like Tiger 1) to build with my kid in a few years. They made a 12 or 10 scale radio control model way back, I think? I used to fuss with Tamya's 35 scale Nazi stuff a lot 35 years ago when I was little. Any info on where I can get something like that?

Nice work! (Is that just a metamerism from the camera or did you paint those tracks with two colors - tan body and silver for the grid/links?)

Either way, NICE WORK!

TRE Cup 04-19-2010 07:17 AM

If anyone is interested, i have a large collection of new un built, in the box 1/24 that i accumulated from the 70's thru the 90's.
Porsche , Ferrari, Ford racing is the general theme, but there are others (MBZ, Mini, Honda, etc)

I don't have a listing of all the various ones, but shoot me an e mail in what you are interested.

Most of them $10 each. The high tech build versions (some photo etched metal parts) $20 each

White metal: Also a very rare Western Models 1/24 250 GTO for $200 and a SMT 1/24 427 cobra for $200

thanks

I am very interested in the Porsche ones! Send me a PM and let me know what you have. Thanks.

I haven't bought a model in decades. I do have this one lying upstairs, though. No idea what scale it is- I believe it's a Pocher Testarossa. I put the CD in there for scale reference.

Thats a Pocher Testarossa kit. Worth a buck or two. IIRC, they were re-branded to sell in the states by Revell. It should have scaled ignition keys :D

The barrel is aluminum. The kit is 1/35 and made by Dragon. Everything you see was part of the factory kit except the hand applied Zimmerit . The Zimmerit was an anti mine paste that was applied to their tanks. This was done as a counter measure to the crazy Russians who would run up to the tank and apply a magnetic bomb. Ebay is your best bet for unbuilt kits.

Either way, NICE WORK!

I have a standard process for the treads.

Paint - Burnt Umber acrylic (old rust)
Wash - black oil point
Wash - umber oil paint
Dry Brush - Orange acrlyic (tank tracks would rust overnight)
Finsh - Dry brush - Silver enamel

Crazy I know

mistertate 04-19-2010 10:16 AM

The part I struggle with is paying $35 for a good kit plus about $20 for paint and at least 40 hours labor I might as well buy a die-cast from AutoART that looks better and is more durable anyway. I liked them when I was a kid because they were more detailed and realistic than most of the stupid toys available. He-man and cartoonish fantasy crap. I still get the bug every once in a while but I'd rather throw all the money and labor at my real car.
The hobby store in my town has been transitioning to the Gamer/Figurine market for the last ten years. Lame.

Jagshund 04-19-2010 10:53 AM

Holy Moses. I just saw the same Pocher model I posted selling on ebay for $400-700. Granted, no bids on the $700. But $400!! For a model! It's just been keeping my Porsche posters flat for over five years now.

Crazy.

mistertate 04-19-2010 03:04 PM

And then you accidently glued the doors shut. May as well fill it full of firecrackers now...
