Ruf builds a V8
(Old news for those lucky Pelicans who get their copies of Excellence sooner than I do)
![]() 4.5 liter, 32 valve, 4 cam V8 rated at 550hp@8500rpm(redline)(!)/367 lb.ft of torque@5400rpm. (Nothing in the article about the vee angle) Here's the kicker, it weighs 485 lbs, compared to the current GT3 engine that weighs 584. Plus it will sit two inches lower in the rear of the 911 than the flat six. Interesting fun fact: direct drive for the water pump, generator, and AC compressor - no accessory belts needed. Production begins in late 2011.

I like the idea. Sensible engineering and lighter.
One thing of note is that Porsche is using a strengthened version of the Carrera engine for their new Turbo. That means they are dropping the proven 964/993 cased version! I wonder if RUF were inspired by the many American V8 conversions. ![]() ![]()

I just hope production 911's get a flat or V8. I think a flat8 would work just as well. I don't see a reason that it has to be a V for space or weight reasons. What about a PUSHROD flat 8?

Why would anyone build a flat V-8? They're totally obsolete.
So are pushrod motors for that matter. ![]() |

I love the engine. Kudos to RUF!
But please keep it the hell away from the 911.

The Ferrari Testarossa is one rare example of a flat engine that is really a 180 degree V angle engine- it's not a boxer in the way flat 6's and flat 8's from Porsche are. This is why they need to build a flat 8: And it needs to go in a Cayman.

And as much kudos to Ruf as all the other Porschevs out there. I'm not a purist all of the time, but a V8 in a 911 is automotive blasphemy, again, IMO When this day comes, please let the gods of design use their powers and transform the looks of the 911 as well, in a Pinto, or Chrysler Le Baron, or something equally stunning.... Next time, use green font, so others know you're kidding....

Well we need to beat the ZR1. 632 supercharged power out of a 6.2 liter. Eventually you need displacement. Porsche can gizmo a six cylinder all they want but eventually you need to add displacement and possibly cylinders. There is nothing "anti-heritage" in making a flat6 a flat 8. Plus imagine the sound... |

It befuddles me that anyone alive would not want that V-8 in their car.
No wonder 928s were never accepted by the 911 KooLAiD drinkers... Not only is it bigger and more powerful than the obsolete flat six, it's significantly lighter as well! |

Once they went to water cooling, a V-8 was inevitable...right, Snipe?
