How old is too old for a guy to have first kid?

I think they say 40 or so for a woman to give birth. But what about the man? If he is 40, he may be dead before his kid graduates HS. 50, he probably will be dead, or at least in diapers.

So what do you think?

How long are you planning to live?

You could have a kid at 25 and still die before he/she graduates HS.

Life expectancy for men is around 72 now I think. Docs?

I'm 46 this year.

Son turns 7 next month, daughter 10 in Aug.

Had similar issues/concerns with the math.

Was picturing myself an old geezer, lucky if I make college graduation.

Amazing how fast 10 years goes by.

I'm starting to look forward to the possibility of grand kids.

For perspective, have a friend, her newborn is 4 months old right now. Was born with a terminal liver condition. They performed a procedure that bought him some time to get stronger and she is donating part of her liver.

None of us knows how long we really have so don't worry so much about a future that has not happened yet. Enjoy every bit of today.

Life expectancy for men was 76 a couple of years ago, it's moving up to 77-78

You expect to be dead or in diapers @ 50?

I'm 53 and feel like 23... just got married in December.

My mom is 84 and just got her second hip replacement... my dad is 83 and still drives.

But to answer your question, my mom ask if we were going to give her any grandchildren.

To which I gave an enthusiastic...

NO!

IMHO the energy it takes to raise children is more abundant in your 20's and 30's

PS, wife already has 16 year old daughter and my brother has already provided grandchildren.

Dad was 48, mom 30.

He passed when I was 14.

That is a tough time of life not to have a dad.

I'd say the real tough part physically is the first 3 years... So at 40 you can still deal with the lack of sleep, the diapers, the potty training, lifting the kid etc... Gets easier physically after that, but more challenging in other respects ! ;-)

Part of me says 40, 42 max, part of me say "$%#$% it": will the kid be worse off if you die while he's young or..... if he wasn't born at all ?

I'll say one thing though: they ARE the reason we age. And probably the reason we wanna die eventually ;-)

I was 20 (young!) with my 1st, going to college, running my business all as a single dad. Don't know how I did it, actually I do, I had fantastic parents who helped me immensely..

Don't know if I would survive that routine now at 39.

But I got married in 09 and we just had our son Harrison mid-March. Did I want more kids? I could have lived without another.... until I held my boy for the 1st time. Now the late nights are tough, on both of us. The wifey is 41 and had an uneventful pregnancy until the end when pre-eclampsia nearly killed her.

We did discuss our age factor and felt our lives would be enriched with a child, we are financially stable enough and share the same out look on life: Life is short, live it to the fullest (as mentioned above)

I now get to go to more races, indulge my adolescent hobbies and passions all over again with my new buddy! (see the thread in the tech forum where dads posted pix with their sons working together on their P-car for inspiration if needed)

Win-win!

For our relationship and marriage it was the right path

YMMV

My dad is 85. No medical problems. Takes no medicine. Claims he doesn't even have "aches and pains". His girlfriend is 30 years younger than he is.

He could have been a new father at 60 with no problem.

You are only as old as you feel, how old do you feel? I am 46 and could still keep up with an infant. Did so with the grandson, as we were fortunate enough to have him often in his first few years.

Keep in mind that the future's uncertain and the end is always near. Life expectancy varies with age, at birth about 76, but at 76 it is not zero. You get bonus points for living a long time. I figure to live a long time, no bad habits, good genetics. Ask me in 30 years.

My Brother just had his first at 45. Several friends adopted kids in their 50's. I think that you define what is appropriate.

Mom was 41 and Dad was 45. He passed when I was in my 30's so the timing was ok.

I thought last fall about having a child (was 56) but everything just did not work out or feel comfortable. Would still do it now if the right lady came along but am rapidly getting too old for it.

Most of the people in my family have lived into their mid-90's. Although I'm trying to break the trend, I wouldn't feel bad having a kid in my 50s.

I agree. I'm 45 but I feel no different to when I was 20 something. "Touch Wood"

I have three almost grown children (they live with me ~ my ex lives in another state).
The lady I'm dating is 35, has no children but wants her own.

Worst that can happen is the kid's teacher will congratulate him/her on bringing their grandparents to their HS graduation.

Live on
