Garage door and opener question.

I think it time for a new garage door. The door I have is the old style wooden door with the biggo spring. What do I like? I like the look of the aluminum door, but I don't know which/what has more/less advantage. Is there a type which is more convenience/inconvenience for lift in the future? Most of us love to have some sorts of lift right?
I was looking in Sears website but can't tell which to pick.
Thanks.

Check out the The Garage Journal BBS there is a ton of information about garagre doors and openers. Jack Olsen is a regular poster on that site.

I'm looking at modifying my door to get better clearance for a four poster lift. It's looking to be a bit of a PITA, but it's doable.

You want to talk to the installer about making it a high lift door and get a jackshaft operator. This runs the door up vertically as high as possible before turning it horizontal. It requires using a torsion spring, and the operator spins the spring shaft directly. There's no operator track in the middle of the doorway or motor hanging down at all.

If the installer doesn't know what that means, find someone else. The Sears guy may not be able to do it. Look for someone that does more commercial installations.

If you're in CA, you probably don't care too much about insulation, but a double layer insulated steel door (steel on two sides with insulation between) feels very solid, yet is still pretty light weight.

+1 on jpk's advice. I was a commercial door installer (years ago).
