email junkie?

I came to realize I am an email and technology junkie. I get my email on my ipod touch, iphone, internet tablet, netbook, desktop and work laptop. I also tend to get frustrated with people who dont regularly check their email. By regularly I mean each hour if not more often.

Am I the only one?

I check my personal and work email on my phone a little more than I should, but then I don't use my laptop everyday.

Using it is fine.

Your life will improve in a huge way the day you realize you can turn that crap off. Turn it off for a whole day, see what happens.

When I don't come to this place for a few days, it's a real eye-opener.

I get at least 400 emails a day. Yes, over half of them are spam and deleted but if I turn things off for a day or two, thats over 1000 emails in my inbox. Have been off of the internet for as long as 4-6 days before and trust me, it was a real PITA to clean up.

I check usually at least every couple of hours if not more often...

I was off the grid last weekend no big deal. I will also be off for 5 days in 2 weeks. I think its more that I just like the technology and working in tech just helps feed that.

Okay, Joe, so have a really honest conversation with yourself and look me straight in the eye (computer style ) and tell me that you get 200 crucially important emails a day. The hell you do.

I used to get 100 work-related emails a day, half of them were the 'ring of 10 people' hitting REPLY ALL and saying "me too." So we had a little meeting and talked about it and now it's down by at least half, which is a good start.

Americans are addicted to needless communication. When it's voluntary, (like PPOT), that's ok. But it's on the verge of being out of hand. Half the people out there automatically pull their phone out of their pocket the second they get in the car. Guys run around the airport with their blutooth gaymakers in their ears, scrolling through their contact list, just trying to find someone to call. People hit "reply all" and say "Me too." It's crazy and it's also very stupid that I'm typing this on a web forum. Maybe I should log off for a day!

I used to have email & internetty on an 8525 (HTC) phone and used it constantly. Then I decided that I was important enough to make everyone else wait for my replies . . . I dropped the services and switched to a candy bar unit.

Then I dropped that one into the 'Hooch . . . went back to the 8525 without the fancy-schmancy services; I rarely even take it with me anymore. In fact, it's sitting next to me right now but the radio's turned off. I found myself so annoyed at the prospect of becomming just another name on an email forwarding list that I'm really cutting back on all forms of communication.

Personally no, but when you factor in that I run a couple of websites, three bulletin boards that I administer and moderate and then do work emails, it will usually run into at least 100 a day that I have to deal with. Then there are another 100 a day from aviation forums, sports car forums (like this one) as well as motorcycle, solar power (am slowly rolling over to putting the house on solar) and so on. It adds up too fast.

Agree that we are addicted to immediate communication but the problem is that my boss is as well. He is 10 years younger than I am but expects a reply to his emails within 20 minutes or so, and he gets one. Thats part of the reason why I have the job as he is taken care of...

Joe

I've gotten better about it now that I am working a job and just flat don't have time to check my email nonstop... but if I am near a computer and not busy.... My email is one of the tabs open... as well as PPOT and Facebook...

I semi unplugged last week. I must say it was rather nice. The summer before I found this blackhole I spent 2 whole weeks with 0 technology on a backpacking trip. I would really love to do that again....

Once Bill Gates was asked what he was most proud of in his life. He replied: Inventing Email......... I want to send him a bill for the time it takes me......I'm a little like Joe, locked in and it's overwhelming if off the radar a few days........

I have not upgraded my cell phone to an internet/web phone.

I can't be bothered/distracted by you Bozos during the work day...

While at home, I have my e-mail set to autocheck every minute!

If you send me an email, do not expect me to reply any faster than when you would send me a regular letter.
Could be I reply swiftly, if you're lucky, but it could take a while too... I refuse to be a slave of technology.
I don't jump up to look at my phone to read textmessages or answer calls either, most of the time my cell is in silent mode...
It's very relaxing to disconnect from the digital madness where you have to be ready all the time, have to answer swiftly, read emails immediately...

I good friend of mine was very reluctant to even get a cell phone. He was on the phone a lot at the office. I kept telling him a cell phone is just a tool that you control. It has a silent mode and even an off button. He finally saw the need for a phone when his business took him away from the office a lot. He had the phone for over a year before I ever got his number. If you call him it is rare he answers. He will call back when he is ready.
