OK...another off the wall idea: PPOT Right Coast Land Speed Record Assault Team

As you can tell I have waaaaay to much time on my hands this time of year.

And you left coast guys shouldn't have all the fun with plentiful tracks and great events like LeMons and chump car events. Now something a little closer for us folks on the right side of the continent.

Buckterrier and I have been kicking around doing an open road event like the Silver State or Big Bend. But that is not an inexpensive proposition and the time/travel/expense logistics are imposing.

So I casually suggested something like a Pelican presence at the speed trials standing mile top speed event in NC at the Maxton Mile. Searching these forums I found Pelican Paul Ruiz was doing some standing mile TS events down in south Florida in his '88 930. But he has cojones and a wallet far larger than my commitment to motorsposts. He ran 179 mph in his much modded car a month or so ago at the Miami event. He's obviously searching for that elusive 200 mph mark

Back to reality. Looking over some of the rules at the East Coast Timing Assn site (www.ecta-lsr.com) I ran across the Maxton mile event in NC. There are a lot of purpose built LSR cars entered but also a lot of guys entering their street cars and motorcycles (even vintage VW bugs). I did note that if you run over 135 mph thru the traps, a speed I think attainable in an SC or Carrera, there are additional safety requirements such as roll bars for 135-150 mph cars, cages over 150, parachutes over 180 etc.

But I started looking at some of the other classes and records...particularly the small bore cycles. There are some 50cc classes with records in te 50-65 mph range. Someone ran an old allstate 125cc at 68 mph. Hmmmm....perhaps someone has an old honda 50 or 90 laying around. Or we could research the rules and begin scouting craigslist or neighbors back yards for something to throw together as group. Find some skinny Peli-kid (porsche4life aka "Sid the squid"?) to throw a set of leathers on and safety wire the throttle WFO.

If not bikes, I'm sure someone has some oddball vehicle we can find an obscure class for...anybody have an NSU micro car? A Saab 2 stroke? No guts, no glory.

With the brain trust here we could be invincible: Tim Hancock as race engineer/chief fabricator, Moses/Tobra as team docs (and get entrants thru med exam), Laneco as Pit Babe/Umbrella chic...hmmmmm

Well if you don't wanna go that far, perhaps we could converge on NC for one of the Maxton spring weekend events and have a go at the measured mile. Entry fee/membership in ECTA is relatively cheap. Throw a roll bar in your DD 911 or 944 and have a go. Or let your chicken bone kick in and lift. Bragging rights and all.

What say ye? *****s and giggles or harebrained?

I have a roll bar in my garage I would donate to the cause. Have several PP stickers laying around too. Not sure what the speed rating is on them...

Jim, If you build it I'll come ride it!

I've got some seat time of torquey 250s...

I've been looking at bolt in bars for the 944 anyways... Hmm... Maybe I should just run the mile in the tow vehicle... That dodge gets off the line better than my 944.... Its just a little loose over 100....

Might be able to score some nitro tablets for the tank. Worked for The Fastest Indian. I too was admiring the tail light. Not good if you did one of those off the back wheel stands.

I can probably offer my old 924S to the cause, but someone would have to come south to get it.. It needs a fuel pump and the intake put back on... gave it to a buddy, but he is tied up on other projects and doubt he is gonna do anything with it...
