I have re-connected with a couple of old friends on FB that I would have never again seen in my life otherwise.

I can't get over how so many people seem to spend most evenings playing "Farm Ville" or "Mob Wars".

No kidding, I'm thinking of pulling the plug for this reason alone! I'm rarely, if ever, on FB and only signed up at the urging of a friend - but I'm in sheer amazement at how many "friends" waste a huge portion of thier lives playing this crap!! It's insane. No wonder no one gets anything done!

URY914 05-20-2010 07:39 AM

My wife is on it, I will never be on it. Way too much detail about people you hardly know.

Same here. Very happy I did.

But other than that I'm close to ditching it too.

I've heard that it can be really difficult to cut them loose completely, they cling on you like stink on a turd.

This is what I'm afraid of.

Never been, the wife is thinking about dumping FB, she "heard" they are selling your info like crazy. The founder of FB is supposed to be 25/26 and worth about $5 Billion.

nostatic 05-20-2010 08:00 AM

You can "deactivate" your account, and "delete" your account. Difficult to delete but can be done. Basically you have to find the delete link, do so, then not log in for 14 days.

Next I'd like to get rid of my iPhone, but the email access is too mission-critical for my work...

That link was posted here on the last FB thread. Can you post it again here? I think more than a few of us are ready to get off FB (not that I was very active, just a little curious now and then).

Never mind, I found it:

I've kicked around dumping my iPhone as well. But there are a few apps that are tine savers at work. I use the maps and weather all the time. I don't *need* the iPhone. But I have gotten used to the utilites and it would be hard to get rid of.

Your Privacy setting Instant Personalization is set to Allow.
Go to Account>Privacy Settings>Applications and Websites>Instant Personalization>Edit Settings, and unchecked "Allow"

I did that when it first changed. It still somehow ended up sending out information without any action on my part.

I use it for friends only, not business, and I don't post there too much. I have gotten back in touch with several really old friends, with whom I had lost touch long before the Internet was around.

The CIA doesn't need FB with me, I will gladly tell them or anyone that will listen anything they want to know about me. Problem is, no one really gives a shyt! FB gives people a sense that someone cares, anyone. The tinhat folks wanna think thatthe gov wants to know all there is to know about you. Guess what, they don't. Now maybe Coke or GE wanna know but not anyone else. Sorry to break the news to you...

i bailed about 2 months ago. had an ex contact me with, "cliff you look the same...blah blah blah".

i clicked out the very same day. no thanks! and right before my wheat crop in farmville was about to go to market..damn.

scottmandue 05-20-2010 11:37 AM

I can't live without FB....

How else can I keep up aunt Jill and her struggles with her poodle "fluffy's" incontinence?

Or knowing what my co-workers, sister, uncle, best friend had for lunch?

Or that a friend of a friend of a freind I don't remember from high school is getting drunk at Hooters (and posting pics)?

skinnerd 05-20-2010 12:17 PM

I get emails from Facebook telling me somebody (I don't know) has made a comment on one of my friend's Facebook pages.

You cares!

I'm also about ready to pull the plug on Facebook as well.
I don't do much with it normally.
Aggravating that this stuff happens without your approval.

Normy 05-20-2010 05:29 PM

I'm very tempted to do the same thing, bail from Facebook.

-Sad. This thing allowed me to reconnect with DOZENS of old friends! I really have had a great positive in my personal life from Facebook. I have about 110 friends on there, and all of them love me and I love them a lot! Some of them go back to 1980-

At the same time, some piece of **** who will go nameless linked my Facebook profile to one of my more political posts in the "Off-Topic: Politics and religion" and since then I've just pulled away.

-I will post my thoughts in Politics and Religion for ever. At the same time, I really don't want to be shooting stalkers with my Sturm & Ruger handgun chambered in .40 Smith & Wesson, or with my Mak-90 semi-automatic [that's my story and I'm sticking to it~] assualt rifle, chambered in the wonderful 7.62X39 Warsaw Pact round. This last gun is my favorite: most people call this an AK-47, but since Billy-Bob Clinton doesn't like those....I will call it a MAK-90.

-I really love that gun! I can pick off a penny at 100 yards with that thing, but that damn handgun? It nearly breaks my arm! Oh well. I keep the handgun under my bed, ready to go, but I keep the MAK at the other end of the house. In case of a home invasion, I have weapons at both ends. The bad guys don't know that~

Anyway, as to Facebook? I'm up in the air. I get a lot of attention and it is GREAT to talk to old friends! On the other hand, I might wind up shooting people for violating my privacy. Then I have to dispose of the body, try to cover my tracks...et cetra. My dad has a back-hoe and 40 acres of land in Asheville, North Carolina, so it wouldn't be anything, but you know, it is s real pain in the ass! He'd be pissed about the whole thing anyway, and then there is that damn stench! So I'm up in the air at this point.

N!

That is what I use it for since I live in PA and grew up and went to college in CT. I also keep in touch with relatives that have moved all around the country, etc.

I keep coworkers in a private group that sees little to nothing about me. I felt it may be bad mojo at work to completely ignore their FB requests.

Zeke 05-20-2010 05:55 PM

Only here can you get "facebook" and "AK 47" in the same post.

Way to go.

Yep, I'm gone as of today. Don't need any shoot em up types lookin' for me.

Shuie 05-20-2010 07:16 PM

I've been meaning to do the same for weeks. Thanks for the reminder.
