If you had a PhD in business from U of Phoenix would you insist on being called "Dr."
Just a question for the masses. Can't publicly comment on the reason for my query.
If you had a Phd in business from U of Phoenix would you insist on being called "Dr." by clients and employees?

I think to insist on being called Dr. unless you're a medical doctor is pretty arrogant. Put it on your card and leave it at that, whether its a PhD from Harvard or U of P.
BTW, IIRC U of P is accredited, and Harvard is not.

IMO, it doesn't matter where the degree comes from... Any who insist on being called Dr don't deserve the respect that they insist on.

In the words of my attorney ex-wife, "it depends."
I never insist or even suggest that I'm called "Dr." in my current professional life. I have "Ph.D." on my biz card, but not "Dr." and rarely get addressed as such. I add the degree on my cards as I have one foot in academia and another in military and another in the industry, and it helps open doors and lends some initial gravitas. The only time that I was regularly referred to as "Dr." was when I was a professor. In that case, I didn't believe in the "first name basis" thing with students (these were undergrads - grad students are different), so I was referred to by my students as "Dr." or "professor." But my colleagues or staff? First name... |

Seems like convention is that non-MDs are only called Dr. in a uni setting - ie, they're in teaching/research. Otherwise, only 'Dr.' if they want to be viewed as an irrepressable jagoff.

If I had any kind of a degree from U of P I wouldn't tell anyone.
A degree from them means nothing to me as far as education goes, the best I could say is that it could indicate a person has a long enough attention span to stick it out. My take on University of Phoenix, or at least the one in La Mirada: If you pay for the class you get a C. If you pay for it and actually show up, you get a B. If you pay for the class and show up and do any work at all, you get an A. I enrolled there and took some classes just to get them out of the way. Turned out they didn't transfer to a real university so it was a total waste of time and money, but at least my company was paying for most of it. First class: Instructor (not a professor, not even close) assigned study groups. I got stuck with a woman in our group who was on disability for some reason that wasn't apparent so she was getting paid to go back to school. She didn't have any books or materials. Not even a pencil, even though reading was assigned and a paper was due on the first day (which she never did). Next week, same thing. No books. Third week, no books and she still hadn't done anything. The group was supposed to be meeting every week to work on the final paper and presentation but several of them were not interested, didn't have time or whatever. I was losing patience. So the next week (1 week before the paper was due), I just told them that I'd write it and give them their parts before we were supposed to present it. I knocked it out, 10 pages with proper format and footnotes. I made overhead slides (it was a while ago, OK?), wrote scripts for the other members for the presentation, all of it. Took about an hour and a half. It was actually pretty good. We all end up getting an A on the final and in the class, even the woman who NEVER bought the books or study guide or did any work at all (except read the script I had given her and she barely got through that). She hadn't done a single bit of work, but she sure was pissed at me! She claimed that on the cover page of the paper I had put her name last because she was black and I didn't like her because I was racist! I told her (in front of everyone) that I put her name last because the names were in ALPHABETICAL ORDER and I didn't like her because she was lazy and worthless, and that the color of her skin had nothing to do with it. Next class: It was a marketing class. The first day the instructor asked if anyone planned to go into marketing for a living, everyone said no. Then he said good, I don't want to waste your time and I don't want you to waste my time. Go ahead and do what you want, the only assignment for this class will be the final paper and you don't have to do a presentation. Just turn in something with your name on it. We would show up, hang out for an hour and leave. The instructor would play solitaire on his laptop the whole time, barely acknowledging that we were even there. Again, I wrote a 10 page paper for the group but this time it was all crap I made up, and we all got an A. I doubt the instructor ever read the paper. I could have written jibberish and still recieved an A. So if you want to get an easy degree that's basically meaningless, UOP is your place. It seems to me that it that's all you want, buying a phony degree online would be faster and cheaper in the long run. nope, not gonna say it, not gonna take the easy jab .... ![]() Last edited by sammyg2; 05-26-2010 at 10:54 AM.. |

The U. of Phoenix is not a REAL university, so any degree from there is not a REAL degree.

Having a business degree, no matter how advanced, does not warrant being called a doctor, IMO. Maybe, maybe a famous economist could earn that title in my eyes.
But the University of Phoenix? What is that, like taking high school classes for six more years, and you want me to call you a doctor? Only a real ass would even conceive something like that.

Dr. for MDs. Out of deference, Dr. for an inspiring professor. U of P give me a break. I see that ed reference on a resume and forget it. Now, that's not to diminish the potential of on line course work as many legit universities use the net. Need solid checks and balances for learning assessment.

Dentists like to be called Doctor too. Does that count? What about Chiropractors? They like it too.

Though I may agree that the value of a degree from UoP is dubious, they are accredited by the same accreditation organization as many other colleges and universities and are recognized as "legit" by the US Department of Education.
