Too big to fail
|
? for the pilots/ATC guys
Last week, our CEO (HP) was supposed to come to Roseville for a visit, but at the last minute, decided not to show - this is after they completely re-arranged the campus to accommodate all the security, etc. He was flying in a private jet from the bay area to Roseville (HP has it's own airstrip out here)
The unofficial reason being given is that all bay area airspace was shut down due to Obama being in town. I did a google search and couldn't find anything to back this up. I can imaging some airspace restrictions when Air Force One is in the area, but some things don't add up. For one, this wasn't a surprise for either party, so I'm assuming when they filed a flight plan for the private jet, someone would say "sorry, all airspace is going to be closed" or better yet, hop in the limo (it's a 1 1/2-hour drive). Secondly, I can't believe they'd close down that much airspace for that long. Can anyone provide some insight? People are still talking about this here.

I think that's standard procedure. I don't think they're BSing you, too much.
It is just not public info like on the news, etc, about airspace being closed. But it is on NOTAMS, notices to airmen, and airport reports, etc, for pilots in the area.

AF1 receives the same separation from other traffic, no special treatment. For the time of approach or departure other traffic might be halted but that's about it from my experience here.
If they decided to do the below than it might be possible, unsure how frequent this would be. Quote:

Pretty common to have TFRs issued especially during election years and sometimes there is not too much warning about when they will pop up. I am hoping Obama stays clear of Chicago the last week of July as I fly through there in the Piper enroute to the annual Oshkosh Fly-in.

quite common, but TFRs usually only last @45 minutes or so on either side of his arrival/departure time. If he comes in for an hour long speech or such, and goes right back out, the airspace can be tied up for 2-3 hours and if that was your CEOs time of arrival, he could have said, just forget it.
**Now, that being said, my company is actually the one that flies him (if i think i know who it is) and the TFRs usually dont cover all the surrounding airports per say for that amount of time. Like if the prez flies into JFK, then IFR traffic into LGA and EWR are usually not stopped. Slowed down for a few minutes maybe. Same deal in SFO area.. |

Agree with the above. 30 mile radius is their max for 95% of the visits, and a lot of the time its even less than that.
Find out if Yobama was really there and go from there.

TFRs are a pain, but typically they can be navigated around by timing, checking NOTAMs and/or filing IFR.
In my experiences, most of the guys that get the nastygrams from the FAA are VFR guys out toodling around who haven't checked their NOTAMS or gotten proper briefings, not the professionals.

A TFR would be common in that event. But, they will also close the landing runway and any taxi ways used to the deplaning area for a period of time prior to landing to perform a sweep. Said area will remain closed until the motorcade has left the airside portion of the airport.
We do not provide any special separation up here for AF1 and my friends in the NCR agree that is the rules down there too. 1000' or 3 miles in a Terminal Area and 1000' or 5 enroute. We had lots of fun with TFRs during the Olympics.... Cheers
