Porsche Crest Porsche Trivia

Why does Porsche put the ignition switch on the left side of the steering wheel?

This placement dates back to the early days of Le Mans racing when drivers were required to make a running start, hop into their cars, start them and begin the race. The placement of the ignition enabled the driver to start the car with his left hand and put it in gear with his right. (Wikipedia)

You have any Porsche trivia you want to share?

The 911 was originally the 901. Peugot had the rights to model designations with the number "0" as the middle digit so Porsche had to change it.

BTW-The Peterbuilt I sometimes drive has the ignition on the left side but it is a PIA.
I'm told the location is so that a driver can start the rig without climbing in for pre-trip inspections.

The 928S4 was the first production vehicle to exceed 170mph at the Bonneville salt flats and would go from zero to sixty to zero in just 9 seconds.

• Reutter Carosserie-Werke was acquired by Porsche, and what was left of the company became Recaro.

• 928's are not exotic.

In 1955 Porsche decided to "separate" the 356s that came to the U.S. by calling them Continentals. 356s that stayed in Europe were called European. Each had an emblem on the front fender with either designation depending on their destination.
UNTIL....Ford complained and filed a lawsuit against Porsche for using the name Continental. Ford (Lincoln) had trademarked Continental years before. After 2900 356s produced in 1955, Porsche dropped the Continental.

Another trademark story.....
A man in SoCal heard rumors that Porsche was developing a new car in the early 90's to be called the Boxster. He went down to the patent/trademark office and registered the name Boxster. Just before the intro in 97, Porsche's lawyers registered the name Boxster in the U.S. They got it in all states except California. They contacted the man who had it registered to negotiate a deal. The man traded the Boxster trademark for a brand new 993 TT.

I remember reading this but don't remember all details.

Somewhere in the early fifties a guy in a Porsche 365 passed a police control point with a speed of 180 km/h, which was unheard of in those days!
The police officers did not even attempt to follow him but they did call it through to their colleagues who were posted some 30 km further.
When the guy reached the second control post, he saw them in time and slowed down.
Because it was only 11 minutes ago that they received the call the police men did not think that this was the guy that was speeding.
The Porsche driver stopped and was let through. The policemen said that they were waiting for some other guy in an white car that was speeding, and that this guy would be there soon....

That guy must have had the hardest time hiding the grin on his face....

I'll try to post some more details later.

Just to give you an idea of what a simpler time that was, Ford's lawyers gave Porsche until the end of the model year before enforcing their copyright so that they would not have to change the name midstream in '55 M.Y.

If the tables were turned today and someone infringed on a Porsche trademark or copyright, Porsche would make them scrape the name off of every last car or truck.
