HS barrel in a US&S 1911 ?
I have a very nice 1943 US&S 1911.
The barrel in it is a Colt but in my pile of parts I have a barrel marked HS on one side of the barrel link boss and P on the other. Did the US&S come with this HS barrel?

unlike many p-car owners who like putting v-8's in them and backdating and forward dating them and then thinking(emphasis) they are worth more than they really are, the gun world DOES NOT work that way.
if thats the way it came LEAVE IT THE HELL ALONE if yer looking to EVER sell it. if yer looking to shoot it because the existing barrel is pitted/wasted junk, than i would go to a very prominent gunsmith that has big time credentials to figure out the CORRECT solution. example: if you reblue an old winchester or any model of firearm, your resale has flat fallen off the face of the earth unless you find that certain rare individual that likes it. magnaport a veapon and yer resale has fallen on its face, unless once again you find that individual who likes it. my .000000000002 centavos |

That is the point of my post. The Colt barrel is most likely a replacement. In some research, I found that the US&S may have been manufactured with the HS barrel marked "P". I have that barrel. I am trying to varify that research. "LEAVE IT THE HELL ALONE" may be poor advise if I have the original barrel to reinstall. BTW: I turned down $3200 for it as it is.

remember in 1943 EVERY GUN MFG was mixing and matching to get product to the front lines. not uncommon to find different mfgd parts on veapons. it was times of dire starits and whoever had the part it was put on.
now after the war this continued even on when veapons returned to arsenals for refurbishing. hence singer, ibm, trw parts interchanged with IH,winchester blah blah. now whats key is taking serial number and finding out build date or approximate date and where mfgd and compare to others built around that date. some of these high end auction houses have some very very intellectual .45 gurus along the lines of sothebys that can give ya some insight. |

The weapon doesn't appear to have any markings indicating a return for refurbishing so I'm guessing the newer barrel was added by a previous owner. Of course I'm just guessing. One thing seems certain, the Colt barrel does not belong in this firearm. Thank you for your comments.

quite a few arsenals placed various markings indicting a refurbish like flaming cannon balls for instance.
pictures will help alot. especially any proof markings, like antlers for ULM on HK's. everyone has some kind of proofing mark..............usually. sounds like a hell of a KEEPER! |
