Got a 40-OSHA Cert and want to make bundle, read this.
If you search the job sites you'll see dozens of recruiters and consulting firms getting into the cleanup game down in the Gulf. If your unemployed and willing to work 30+ days in the heat its decent money.
If you have 40-Hour OSHA certification (Hazwhopper we call it) and a current 8-hour refresher several recruiters and Environmental Consultants will give you a job as "Site Safety Supervisor", immediately. Here's the game: Once your hired with one of the firms you will be on call and can get a message anytime anyday to mobilize to Mobile, Alabama or Pensacola, Florida. You are now a BP contractor! You will attend a safety class and then will be assigned a cleanup team (yes, you do not do the physical labor) where you ensure BP's health and safety protocols are met. Basically, if your OSHA certified you know what I am talking about. Here is an example of two offers I just received relative to pay. Base pay is $18/hr, anything over 40 hours is $27/hr. You are expected to work 12-hours per day for seven days/week. That equates to 84 hours/week. One firm gave 18 days on and 3 days off, the other 12 days on and 3 days off. Per Diem has been a flat rate of $160/day ($110 for food/hotel and $50 for car). A few offer an extra $30/day for your laptop. So per diem can be anywhere from $4,800 to $5,700 for the 30-days. Several pay for your mobilization costs as well. You can be assigned anywhere from St. Charles, LA to Panama City, Fl. Rumor has it that you can get $27/hr for being on a vessel either offshore or in the marsh. You can wind up on the beach as well. Understand that the health and safety culture of these oil company's are no less than intense. With the heat in Florida I believe they may be working a 20 minute on and 40 off if wearing tyvek, but hydration and shade breaks are critical. The last thing BP needs is press showing workers on the beach collapsing from heat!! If you do the math its big bucks for a months work with a chance to re-mobilize several times after that. Split a hotel room or get a bunch to rent a beach house and your saving $$$$. As the oil approaches and political pressures are placed on cleanup and restoration, thousands have flocked for cleanup work for quick $$$ and maybe because its a noble cause. Go onto Indeed.com, type in Gulf Oil Spill and search the positions. If this helps anyone here thats a good thing. ![]() Bob |

Some require you have to be a resident of Florida, Mississippi or Alabama, but the laborers are working by the hundreds for lesser money ($12/hour).
Not bad money though if you like hanging out on the beach in the hot sun breathin in oil vapors all day!! |

Friend of mine from Canada is down there working on the spill, he's got all tyhe training but his main thing is he is a boat capt. last I heard he was piloting a boat, small, with wildlife people on board while they picked up birds for cleaning, so for certain jobs your don't have to be a resident of the state affected

I've already signed up for my OHSA 40 hour class. I just hope they don't stop the flow before I can make some cash.

I congradulate BP for enforcing all safety policies. The latest is that a group of 100 underwent their 40-hour OSHA training and the instructor was not OSHA certified to teach! So BP kicked these guys off the cleaning crews and sent the contractor and instructor walking!
There is a new course, "training the trainer", which requires 80-hours of instruction. This allows you to hand out all OSHA certs. from 40-hours down to the annual 8-hour refresher. This is where the bucks are down in the Gulf, OSHA certification. Stay in an air-conditioned classroom and get huge bucks from BP for spinning these folks out like a revolving door! Anyways, for anyone willing to undergo the training, and I believe the contractor will provide the class, its a way to make some good money while getting into a worthy and just cause. |

I spoke to two different companies and they tell me you must be certified before you show up to work. They will not give you OHSA training,

BP is insisting you have 40-hour OSHA although a 24-hour will do just fine. I understand several recruiters will provide training, but at your expense! If they provide per diem while in training thats what you want. At least that will help with expenses. Once OSHA certified, you can take the 8-hour refresher a year from now to stay current. You can take the test (easy) online through several internet sites and they will send you the certification.
Get on Careerbulder. com or Indeed.com to name a few and type in "Gulf Oil Spill" and pages of opportunities will come up. Keep at it. The two companies that tried to recruit me wanted to get 100 Safety Supervisors onboard ready to go. Take a look at ETI (Colorado) and WTC (Baltimore) as two recruiting companies actively recruiting now. Good luck |
