Why do sportcasters wear a suit/tie?

Everytime you turn on ESPN or Speed or whatever, the sportcasters are wearing a suit and tie. From the weekend wrap up shows to the actual event, they have some formal attire. I will admit that I watch a bit of NASCAR as well. That's even weirder. They have pit reporters that will wear a full nomex fire suit under the guise of safety I suppose and they have all sorts of folks involved in the sport not wearing the Nomex a few feet away.

Let's not talk about the ball sports where the coachs dress like the players (baseball), wear a sweatshirt (football) or look like they are headed to a board meeting (basketball).

Who decides these things and why?

Peer Pressure. Ya gotta look like a professional and that is a monkey suit. I refuse to play that game. I am about to go to a big dinner that is "Business attire" for me that is Dockers and a Polo shirt. I will not play that dress up game.

Same here. Will not even wear a tie for funerals or weddings. Only thing they are good for is tying the ladies to the bed...

Why do college basketball coaches wear $2,000 suits?

Because they can

I usually wear a shirt and tie with the white coat at the office; generally don't take the coat with me to the hospital, though I suppose I ought to do so. Professional attire, I am so I wear it. I find I am much more effective in doing my job if I am dressed right. I suppose the trend is against this, but I am a bit old fashioned in many ways.

I do have to admit if my Dr. came to me looking like a street person I might be taken aback. There are occasions where a monkey suit is a good idea. My job does not have those occasions.

A man should own a nice suit and wear it occasionally. If your employment is not amenable to this, put it on and go out on the town with your young lady, or man I guess, but I can't imagine there are a lot of Okie homos. Gives the ball and chain an excuse to wear a nice dress, they like that stuff, or seem to.

I have quite the array of Christmas ties, as I used to go to a few hospital parties each year, only one annually now.

.

Completely invalidated the prior statement. Christmas ties are a fail.

From what I see of the 20 (year old) somethings walking around. They will be wearing cargo shorts, flipflops, a T-shirt with a fish on it and a ball cap on backwards at the most formal of events. The future is sub-casual.

Except every single time they need to buy a NEW dress. A $200 blazer lasts me under the thread gives out.

Of the many medical facilities I visit for work only a few are casual. Most doctors(male) wear a tie with the white coat.

I do have one who always has a Hawaiian shirt under his lab coat. He also has a bada$$ WRX so he's ok in my book. Yes, he's a OB/GYN.

We were recently given the ok to wear shorts but I have chosen not to do so.

I don't think it's appropriate for the environment that we work in.

(UPS/FEDEX typically do not go past the front door of most offices but we do.)

I would prefer to have button down Oxford shirts as well but we get golf shirts instead.

My guess is they wear them for the same reason everyone else who wears them does. Why does anyone wear a suit and tie?

Some are required by their employer to wear easily identifiable clothing.

You could pretty much show up for work newwd, couldn't you, Milt?

I see a lot of people in PJs going to class. Now people literally roll out of bed and go to school. That + the size of students now makes walking around campus a lot less fun than it was just 10 years ago.

You always see politicians in a collered shirt and a blue blazer as well - like a uniform. I like wearing ties with vests under a sportcoat (to hide my gut) but I really like bow-ties but my wife thinks I'm a geek when I wear them and teases me and makes me feel bad. I thought about tieing her up with them and spanking her until she said she was sorry but with my luck she would like it, make me do sex to her and ruin my ties in the process.

I would rather not take the chance. Maybe an Ascot?

But the suits they wear look ridiculous. Worst offenders are the former athletes on the NFL pre and post game shows. They're right out of the "Prom Night in the Hood" photos with those suit jackets that have around 10 buttons on them or are some silly shade of red or green. How does someone see a suit like that and thinkm, "Yeah, I think that'd look good in pastel red for my next tv appearance?"

I enjoy dressing well on occasion. Generally speaking, when meeting clients and other people in a professional capacity it's far better to be overdressed than underdressed. Once you're underway and working on a project you can feel out what's appropriate.

Like it or not though, people DO judge you by your appearance - it generally does little harm to look/speak/act like a professional rather than a bum. If your client is totally casual, you can always adjust accordingly after you're on board. But it's important (IMHO) for them to see you in a formal capacity so they know you're going to represent them well and never embarrass them or anything like that.

I think the last time I wore a tie was for my Chinese "wedding." Note the '73RS tie.

Sure is nice living out west, where no one expects folks to wear ties for meetings. On the east coast I never went to a meeting without a tie.
