If you really want a high ceiling effect, go with the Vegas Venitian motif:

Roger that. Dark brings things in closer. The wall at the end of the room should be the darker contrasting wall, not the other.

I have a black ceiling and black end wall in my office. Walls are mustard, dark hardwood. Wifes idea; the Porsche crest looks great on the black wall

You all are making this too complicated.

A lighter color on the ceiling does improve space appearance.

Avoid flat on walls - the only reason it is used is that it is cheaper. But flat paint is best for the ceilings where it makes drywall wave and taping less apparent.

Same hue but 1/3 - 1/8 the tint. Note that those cards with paint colors on them are the same color with different color density, so those colors are picked out for you. If you pick a wall color that is fairly light then go with the white.

If you have white crown molding, color on either side really helps it stand out better.

I know all this because I get to relearn it every time my four kids shuffle bedrooms and my wife decides on a different bedroom color. Before I change it a third time in seven years she has to control the books, clothes and other piles in the room. Jeeezzzzzz.

As a union trained and one time professional painter, I tend to disagree with anything other than flat on the walls. And, it is not always cheaper. Really good quality flat wall will wash and best of all, won't shine when in line with a window. That's just poor decorating.

Colored walls and different colored ceilings... they look great and define the person and their style. White is what you have when you are renting and the owner/landlord will not allow you to paint.

+1 The glossier it gets, the more defects show up. I like flat and might go egg shell if it's light enough, but no more.
