split air-conditioners

I'm looking to buy one of these for my mothers flat. Sanyo used to be the best brand out there, but they are no longer available where she lives.

Options are Mitsubishi, Hitachi or Panasonic.

Anyone have any recommendations among these, or are they all much the same?

Find one that can be serviced locally.

Yeah, it's an air handler inside and a remote condenser outside with only the 2 cooper lines penetrating the wall. At least she doesn't have to listen to the pump, just the fans. Maybe she can slow the fans and direct a table fan to distribute the inside air.

It is a split-system and a ductless system.

Very familiar with them. All that we had in the Bahamas. Had few problems out of over 50 units. Most are loud...most are reliable. Just a "split" window unit.
GREAT advice on choosing the one that is most popular in your area....

I've only installed Samsung, Carrier, and L.G.units. I like L.G.the best. They have an Art Gallery collection which are pretty cool.
I don't think you can go wrong with either of your choices. They are all basically the same. Get the unit with the best warranty and after sales service.

Hey, you sound like an expert.

Is there a simple rule/formula for the BTU required to cool a room of a certain square footage?

Put another way, how many BTU should the unit have to cool a room of approx. 1000 to 1200 square feet?

Service and parts. We installed one to help out the old tired unit that came with the building in my friend's restaurant. Its been more then 6 years and not one problem. It was a Mitsubishi. They run that thing all day long in the summer months.

I've only seen a couple of these in the US, but they're all over Belize where we just went on vacation. I'd like to get one for the garage to replace the current 2-ton window unit. The unit in our bungalow in Belize was about half the noise of my garage window unit. Unfortunatly the split system is about 3 times the cost of a window unit.

A 24,000 btu unit would cool 1,000 sqft in Houston.

Yes, they are pricy compared to a window unit. And you have to have it installed, not a DIY job.

I'm not an expert but I stayed at a Holiday Express last night.

Seriously I'd get a heat loss on your mothers flat. Is it single story or 2 story?
Lots of shade or sun?
A one ton may do it depending where the indoor unit is placed.
