You don't see the merit of a 4Runner that is significantly more powerful and gets nearly double the MPG? Same story with a Land Cruiser?

Jeeze, in retrospect I think a VW TDI, or even older iDi, would have been a better choice than the old ~85 hp 2.4 NA engine I used. I was attracted to the simplicity of the weekend bolt-in swap, but it is S L O W. An older VW 1.9 AAZ idi would have been great, they run 90ish HP and much easier to find parts for

In that case I may want to consider diesel in the future. Thanks.

Excellent project, nice work.
I'm another fan, I'd be all over a diesel 4 Runner or Land Cruiser. |

FYI: there's a guy in Ontario selling adapter plates to mount VW TDi engines in the 3.0V6 4runners. You'd still have to fab up engine mounts, cooling & exhaust, but still worth considering if anyone has toyotie or 4runner dieselswapitis

I've put about 3000 miles on the motor since the swap and everything is running fantastic! I really need to stop driving it so much but it is just soooo much fun to drive
![]() The interior trim is completed. The 4WD shifter was able to be rotated 180 degrees so it angled in the correct position. Air conditioning is blowing ice cold. I found that the compressor was not getting power when the switch was activated... Simple wiring fix. Mileage... I've been tracking it at most fuel stops. When I drive around town, I get the best mileage at around 24. When driving around town it is very easy to keep the RPM's below 2K which helps to improve mileage. Highway driving yields 21-22 MPG mostle because I'm cruising at 65-70 MPH and at 2500 RPM. Gearing... Different gearing could bring the revs down and improve highway mileage but I would not want a taller first gear. I had one experience where I was pulling a heavy trailer and had to stop on a hill. I managed to get going alright but I almost wanted a granny gear! Taller gears would not have been a good idea... Keep in mind I am running 285/17 BFG Mud Terrain tires so I am sure they absorb a couple MPG's and affect the gearing. I also had one experience going up a tall and long mountain pass where the engine temps started rising. It was just circumstantial...summer temps, thin air, constant turbo boost. It was just a recipe for a hot engine. When I reached the summit, I put it in neutral and brought up the revs and it cooled down amazingly fast! I would like to get an EGT gauge as well as an intercooler. I dont think it would have been possible to pull a trailer in those conditions so an intercooler is a must. More projects for another day This being said, I LOVE this truck and would not change a thing!!!!!

Yes, those guys are VERY proud of their work. I did everything myself so I saved a ton of money and ultimately got exactly the truck I wanted in the end. I'm probably in the whole truck, including initial purchase price, between $15-20K. Keep in mind this includes; ARB lockers, winch, ARB bumper, tires, wheels, 70's Recaro seats etc... For me, it's worth every penny. It is one of those vehicles that you just don't get tired of driving...like our early 911's
![]() BTW, I just turned 225,000 miles and have had zero issues. Looking forward to hitting 500K some day ![]() ![]()
