91 MPH in a 45. What can he expect?

My friends 18 year old son has a heavy foot. He's a good kid, but he drives too fast. Last year he totaled a decent car driving too fast. No injuries, but the car was a loss.

His new car was much less expensive. $2.000 I think. He works, and pays for his car related expenses himself.

The ticket was in Contra Costa County California.

Any idea what the fines and insurance implications will be?

I don't know about California. But, here going twice the speed limit gets you locked up immediately. Not just a ticket.

+1 - he didn't go directly to jail?

No idea on fine and DL points but I would expect a ton of both.

Assuming the local jails are pretty full or he'd be in jail.

Don't know about CA but that's probably plenty for mandatory revocation, anywhere from 30-90 days.

I can't say about where you live, but most of the places that I've lived if you're going more than 25 over the limit, you're getting a ticket for reckless driving, and usually at that speed, you're going to jail unless the speed limit is 70 where you got busted. It wouldn't surprise me if he loses his license for a bit.

At that kind of speed in GA (I haven't had any real traffic issues since moving to SC) and at his age, there'd be a mandatory suspension of license with no work permit, DD course, community service and hefty fines. BTDT.

In VA he should bring a toothbrush with him to court, cause he won't be spending the night in his own bed.

In GA, if under 18, you loose your license for 3 months. If over 18, up to the discression of the officer to give a reckless driving charge. Now there is a "Super Speeder" law in effect that tacks another $200.00 onto the local speeding charge.
When I was 16 (1984) I got caught for 23 over in my 914 ...lost my license for three months which happend to be all summer long.

He will lose his liscence for 3-6 months, and be put on probation for 1 year, he will also be required to take a driver intervention course, and will have to retake his drivers test to get his liscense back......
That's what I think will happen, unless daddy ponies up for a big $$ lawyer.....

I would suspect that removing Daddy's boot from his behind might be a bigger problem.

I think he should lose his license for a time. This is not simply a "heavy foot". He is being irresponsible.

"A good kid"? He needs to do some time in a funeral home patching up bodies for burial from automobile accidents.

Out here "reckless" is at ofcrs discretion regardless the speed (unless it's a state trooper then they have guidelines). Have him call the traffic unit, they'll tell him.

If he had a Porsche he could have been doing 140 mph in a 70 mph zone.

Not that I've ever done that.

He needs to learn good driving habits now, seems like he will get some time to think about it.

depending on what you and your friend think is proper,* tell him to not speak about it to anyone, esp. a cop if they call him in, and start looking for a good lawyer

* or maybe just let the system do whatever to him -- they apparently did not take him to jail in the squad car, so that is a good sign
