I hate my POS iPhone...

Title says it all.

I've never been happy with it, but yesterday took the cake. It was replaced under the extended warranty I bought after 22 months and the browser on the new one just locks up for 30 seconds or so every 5-10 minutes. It also just seems to lock up in general doing other tasks and runs very sloooowww. Went to the Apple store and the guy said to try back up and restoring it to see if it helped. It didn't, but I tried again yesterday. Only this time, I lost all my interweb bookmarks on my laptop. No amount of restoring has helped get them back.

OK, I'm all done, but still don't feel any better...

I assume you have a 3G running 4.0.2?

That is not a good combo and apple is expected to release a fix (4.1) on Sept 7.

Now the 3GS on 4.0 runs like a champ. Never been more pleased with a handheld device.

I love my android phone (google g1). I have a buddy with the droid x. He has had it lock up, but a reboot fixes it. And you don't need iTunes.

Make sure you have plenty of memory. I offloaded a bunch of pictures and the hang up has been cured. I was running 4.0 on my 3GS. At the same time I upgraded to 4.0.2. Seems to be fast again.

It's a 3GS with 8GB and I've used about 3GB. I just updated to the 4.0.2 yesterday, but it's a no go. It still locks up at warious times. Very frustrating. My old one worked fine, it's just the replacement (2 months old) hangs up constantly from day one.

EDIT: It's a 3G...

Unless you were jailbroken on your current phone prior to installing 4.0.2, you can't.

Take the phone back to Apple (or your warranty provider) and ask for a different one, you probably have a bad phone.

There is nothing in 4.0.2 that causes the type of issues you describe.
It's possible to have a bad app causing the issues. Restore the phone as a new phone, do not use the backup. If the phone works fine, then start installing apps one at a time and see if the issue persists.

Tip: Save a copy of your backup - you will have to search for the file, I'm not sure where it is.
If you restore as a new phone and then make a backup, it will overwrite your old backup and essentially erase it.

I had the same problem - finally downgraded to 3.1.3. Now my 3G works like a charm. Unless you want to wait for 4.1, here is how you downgrade the OS:

How to Downgrade Your iPhone 3G[S] from iOS 4 to iOS 3.1.3

I lost my data, but not that big of a deal - I had my contacts on my laptop. Just had to re-enter my email accounts and reload songs. HUGE difference - 4.0 on a 3G totally blows in my experience.

iPhone4 and 3GS seem to work fine with 4.0.2. iPhone 3G (mine and others) was occasionally unusable on any of the v4 OS variants. The last straw was when it took me 5 minutes to type a short email.

Back with 3.1.3 and it runs like a champ.

I must be getting like pwd and his 'stang with this issue.

This is all I need:

The front screen broke a while back, I peeled the remaining glass chunks off. It's scratched all to hell. I've broken some small plastic pieces off of it from dropping it several hundred times. It's gone in a river before.

It still makes calls 100% reliably, holds battery life for 4 days, and doesn't drop a single call in this supposed bad-ATT area (according to my iPhone 4 roomate).

Email? Camera? Calendar? I have an ultraportable laptop that I paid good money for, I use it for that. Why duplicate devices?

I think the whole phone market putting out these amazing little devices that do-it-all-but make reliable calls is horse****. Those fancy features mask the fact that call sound quality hasn't improved since the 1980's. They also trick you into thinking that because of those features it's OK to be paying ridiculous $$$$ per month.

Eh. End rant.

You are obviously a Neanderthal.

How can you possibly live without an app to tell you everything?

They need an app that opens a camera window so people can see where they are going without taking there eyes off the phone. I know, I know they probably already have one.

Easy. I have lost count of the work issues I've dealt with by email on my iPhone - when I did not have other devices with me. In part because I didn't need them. Likewise with a camera - being able to quickly snap a photo and send it along can be quite helpful.

That said I don't have a bunch of apps - but do have one "killer app" that I use every week and has frankly changed the way I play music (www.irealbook.net).

My laptop is a 15" macbook pro. I don't have a desktop machine (why duplicate devices?). I don't take it everywhere, since I can do email and light web browsing with my iPhone.

Different strokes...but that is my rationale.

3G and iOS4 fix for slowness....

General -> Spotlight Search -> Uncheck everything... Turn the phone off (all the way) then on. Go back to General -> Spotlight Search -> check everything again...

That should speed things up.

Bring back the brick phone. Nothing said "I'm important" more than the battlefield looking rubber duck antenna. Posers with your iPhones...

I'm using a 4 year old 8525 with the latest version of Windows Mobile. Never had an issue. Perhaps you guys using iPhones should buy some a flip phone and a good handheld game console- pretty much all I've seen people using iPhones for, anyway . . .

I only have 2-3 apps and some email addresses on it. It's been handy for the email and camera to shoot pix from job sites to those that need some in the field info.

That said, I remember having to find a phone all the time and then beeper came out. By the time you called the number back, they were gone half the time...

I'm in the process of doing a 3.1.3 backdate now, so I'll see what happens.
