Mustang 5.0's on track

Anybody driven a new Mustang 5.0 on track? I'm wondering if it would make a credible track car (with the Brembos).

Just about anything would be faster than what you are driving now.

I have a couple of extra tubes of JB Weld if you need them.

I haven't tracked one. I test drove a new 5.0 twice. Its a big car, but the suspension was a pleasant suprise. Well tuned yet compliant. It felt like a German sports sedan. Not sure the springs would be stiff enough for the track. But the body felt very tight. You could probably pull 500lbs of junk off the car in an afternoon. I'm always disappointed by the large curb weight of American cars.

Who cares about resale. I don't ever remember saying to myself before I bought a car, what's the resale going to be? I buy for looks and fun to drive, and I know it's hard to believe but everyone has their own opinion on what is fun and looks good. Celebrate variety, it would be a boring world if it only had one type of car.
My X5 is the only car that every left me stranded out of 30+ cars that I have owned. That M3 cost almost 2x the Mustang and I bet if you keep both cars until they have 200k you would have spent enough on maintenance on the BMW to buy another mustang. If you haven't owned one for awhile you shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion about it.

Just ranting, because some of the narrow minded cult followers ran a decent guy off the board. Stupid to hate someone for the car that they drive, be nice to your fellow motor heads.

WHOA! We didn't dislike the bullit. We disliked it getting dangled in our faces all the time, the running down of Porsches and the PCA by that guy. I really used to like him. I just got tired of every other post being either something about how great the Mustangs are or how crappy the modern Porsches are....

And I've been around older M3s. See my sig. They are great cars, from what I've read the new ones are even better. See the Car and Driver(maybe R&T) comparison to one of the boosted 911s and the ZR1. I do have a few shreds of respect for the new mustang. They are fast cars, but the build quality is still not on par with a German car.

Would I consider a Mustang? Maybe but no way in hell I'd pay sticker for one, It'd have to be way cheap... Wouldn't pay sticker for the M3 either but I'd give more for it than the stang.

A guy at our last autocross showed up with a Cobra. The engine was tweaked a bit. Fresh internals and over 600 hp. It was FAST! It was a nice car. It would be interesting to find out what investment he had in the car.

You talking about the black one that ate itself after like two seasons? It was an insanely fast car, but more importantly, it had a VERY good driver. All that horsepower sent it limping to the house though.

I don't consider the Mustang and the M3 to be in the same category, despite the cool comparison test R&T did. (Plus, I can't afford a new M3, so that's a moot point.)

Nor would I consider the Mustang a substitute for my Porsches. I just think they are very cool, and nothing is quite the same to me as a huge 'Murrican V8 pulling hard. I was just curious if they would fade their brakes in two laps or understeer so badly as to be no fun. I drag raced an '88 5.0 Mustang for many years, and wouldn't have dreamed of trying to go around corners in it. But I sure had fun and won a lot of races!

Jeff, I'm guessing that guy in the video dropped a wheel at the outside of 3B as he was romping too hard on the throttle and it just snapped around and burrowed to the inside. I had a student in a Viper do the dame thing many years ago with similar but less dramatic results. I'd blame the driver, not the car. High HP + Low IQ =

back in 2007-08 when I had my Porsche to play with, I totally pissed off a brand new Crustang owner who had at least 14 rolls of blue masking tape applied to avoid rock chips on his baby on his first track day.

Yes the Crustang pulled me on the front stretch, but I'd reel him in and fill his rear view mirror in the twisty corners.

He was so pissed off in the race pits that a porsche had tarnished his self-polish manhood.

Nah, Mustangs and Camaros are for the Community College Strip Mall poser crowd hanging out in front of a Teriyaki Chicken joint; Vettes and BMW's are for Dentists, get the Dodge Viper and man up.

That describes me perfectly!

I don't buy cars for what they say about me. I buy cars for what I can do with them.

It has a fresh 600HP+ engine. Same driver.

Yup, I've seen a few guys do just that. But on the warmup lap? It takes a special kind of driver to pull that one off. Most of these "special" drivers seem to show up in the 'merican iron.

Don't get me wrong - I love big V8's as much as the next guy. I was actively drag racing big block MOPARs in the late '70's to mid '80's. I love watching the old Trans-Am cars in B Production at the SOVREN events, along with the A Production big block 'Vettes. Very cool stuff.

I have to wonder, though, just how well one of our modern pony cars would hold up to DE day abuse. I've never seen one show up consistently enough to see, nor have I had the opportunity to talk to anyone who has used one for such for any length of time. The C5 and C6 'Vettes seem to hang in there, but I think they are a whole different animal than the new pony cars. The latter being built to a price rather than a purpose, if you will. I would be interested, too, to hear from someone who has tracked one for a few years. It's just that I have yet to meet that guy.

The warmup lap? LOL! I didn't know that. He also should have been chewed a new one for getting out of the car on a hot track.

I agree--that was the main reason for my post. I just can't seem to warm up to Vettes, though. The interiors just feel like cheap junk to me, and I need a back seat for my DD, small though they are in the Mustang.
