Witnessed a car accident today
We were just getting going on our 42 mile ride. A new black Camaro on a side street makes a left turn onto our street, in the same direction. We had not yet entered the intersection. Both roads are 4 lanes or 5 lanes, depending on the part.
Probably 3 car lengths onto the street, he runs off the road into a heavy duty street lamp, and wedges himself on the curb and the lamp base. This is, oh, maybe 8:20-8:30AM. As we pass, he is gunning forward and backwards to try to get off the lamp base. I look and see steam coming from the front. The front is caved is, as expected. Less than a minute later, one of the guys calls from behind to get off the road, as this guy is coming. The entire front bumper is dragging under the car, and he's leaving a trail of fluid. He took a side street until he passed, then doubled back. As we passed an open parking lot for an apartment complex, we noticed the liquid trail AND the bumper laying on the ground. A little about THIS neighborhood. HOOD is the operative word. Not a BAD area but not an area you would expect a brand new Camaro. The apartment complex is old and borders an industrial/rundown area. I'm petty sure the guy was drunk/high/something. I also wonder if the guy was the owner of the vehicle. I think he dumped the vehicle in the apartment complex, but don't know for sure. One of the guys (the Liberal in my thread in PARF) wanted to stop and go back and find the guy and hold him for the Police. I think this is a BAD idea as the guy looked like he might be a gang banger and who knows if he was armed. Well, I say who knows, we are talking Texas, so my assumption is ALWAYS that the other guy is armed, legal or not. Your thought? What would YOU have done?

Working in LA... I probably witness some sort of traffic incident two to three times a week.
It's like dodging bullets out there.

Called 911 and moved on. He was drunk, on drugs, or a car thief. Why mess w/ that?

I witnessed something similar two weeks ago. A white sedan full of hot young ladies was trying to bait me into racing them (I was in my 993). They kept motioning for me to roll down the window, were dancing along to their music and shouting a lot out the windows. I took off, but kept it under 75. They passed me and then dropped back, were driving very erratically. As I neared an intersection with a green light and no traffic around, I glanced in my rearview mirror and saw the girls' car spin out of control, leave the road and skid into the desert, sending up a huge dirt cloud. The only place for me to turn around was a gas station nearby, so I pulled in and called 911, told them what had happened and where and said there could be injuries. They asked why I didn't stop. I told them I saw this in my rearview mirror and was calling from where I'd have to turn around anyway. When I went to turn around, I saw there were already a few other cars stopped to help, so I went on my way. I gave the 911 operator my name and phone, never heard about it again.

Drive by and take a pic showing the plate and driver with my mobile. Then leave and call 911.

That is not an accident, it is a wreck.
Call 911 and give the details.

Just the other day I saw a car running a red light and they hit a stake bed truck right at the rear. The driver running the light realized the truck was passing in front of him and slammed on the brakes sliding right into the truck. I didn't see the truck hardly budge.
The weird part is that the driver could have swerved and missed the truck. Older car, so I'm doubtful about anti skid brakes, but they've been on cars for a long time now. The whole thing looked stupid and totally avoidable to me. |

Sounds like a stolen car to me, or car-jack.

Remember, we were on bicycles in Houston. Cell phone are in plastic baggies in back pockets on our Jerseys. Taking said phone out and remove the plastic to get a photo would be way obvious.
And my stupid new phone has a capacitve screen which won't work with my cycling gloves on. So the whole thing wouldn't be as easy as whipping my cell of the car seat, etc.

On this day, my riding partners were a Liberal Democrat and a Spanish Socialist...
The West Point graudate was not allowed to come out and play by his wife... I am quite glad that the several Spanish people we have living the neighborhood cannot vote.

They darn sure make utility poles like they used to!
It is amazing that wood can do that to a car.

I think that is a metal pole, but a solid wood telegraph pole would have yielded similar I'm sure...

I would guess this was not his car. Any normal person would have tried not to cause any additional damage to their car. Then again, normal doesn't mean much these days.

The pole looks like it is steel. I'm guessing it is a cement filled column. That car had to be moving to get destroyed like that.
