It seems that everyone "up-top" was more worried about the condition of the miners than the miners were -- seems they were well organized, calm, and under control.

Maybe some of those guys should be the ones counselling the folks who were all bent out of shape topside...

Amazing story - I've been following it on-and-off for some time -- it seems they went beyond just survival -- they dealt with the whole ordeal in a very, very positive way. The Chileans must be a resiliant bunch!

@Sidney: while I appreciate your concerns about starving children across the world, what does that have to do with the price of tea in China, or the plight of trapped miners in Chile? Finally there's a story of hope in this world -- there's no need to cast a shadow on it the way you are attempting to.

Chile is what the USA once was. They have been fighting the Chavistas to keep Chile they way it is, and not destroy it.

For example, they have a mandated Social Security, like us, but YOU own the money and can invest the money the way you want. Basically imagine our social security as an IRA.

Remember the huge earthquakes in Chile & Haiti this year? Haiti everyone had their hand out. Not Chile. The buildings continued to stand. The deathtoll estimate had to be revised DOWN from 800 to around 200. And the quake was an 8.8, vs the 7 Haiti. This means it was close to 100 times the quake.

Chile would be my place to go if I couldn't be here.

Well, the mine collapsed on August 9th, and it's now October 13th. August has 31 days, September has 30, so today makes it 69 days. If a child dies of starvation every 5 seconds, then multiply 69 x 24 x 60 x 60 / 5 = 1,192,320 children.

Simple math. Give us something tougher!

Wife runs into mistress at vigil

ONE of the trapped Chilean miners is dreading his rescue after his wife met his secret mistress at the entrance to the San Jose mine.

Yonni Barrios' wife, Marta Salinas, and his lover, Susana Valenzuela, were both holding vigils for him outside the mine.

Ms Salinas, 56, was stunned and horrified when she heard Ms Valenzuela shouting his name amid a crowd of miners' loved ones.

However, she is determined not to give up her man to her love rival.

She told friends: "Barrios is my husband. He loves me and I am his devoted wife. This woman has no legitimacy."

But Ms Valenzuela said the 50-year-old miner, who she met on a training course five years ago, was planning to leave his wife for her. "We are in love. I'll wait for him," she said.

Mr Barrios has been one of the heroes of the landslide drama - using his first-aid training to treat sick colleagues.


He also vaccinated all 33 men, including himself, against flu and pneumonia.

I think it's a phenomenal story of "can do" spirit and triumph over tragedy.

As for leaving them down there to die, perhaps if they were politicians but not working stiffs trying to survive. They deserve all the chances they can get.

OK there has to be something wrong here. With that math over 63 BILLION childred starved to death each year.

I don't think 63 billion people have lived since the dawn of time.

We sure as heck can't feed 63 billion new kids every year.

NASA on the other hand is a HUUUUUGGGGE waste of money.

It was originally disguised as a public project, sending a man to the moon.

But what they didn't tell you, and what most folks were too stoopid to realize was, it was all a huge expansion of the military budget. it was all designed to develop better ICBMS, capable of nuking the soviet union. That's all NASA was about, that's all the moon shots were about.
Using the public exploration scam to justify spending hundreds of billions to develop nukes.
The Soviets did the exact same thing.

Now NASA is nothing more than a geek welfare program.

Just saw them pull up #24. Really worth taking some time and seeing at least one of the minors come up in the rescue capsule. Very, very moving to see how engergetic and enthusiastic everyone involved is.
