German Auto Dismantlers for sale!

I was reading my Autoweek this morning and noticed a very small for sale ad.
Porsche Parts Business, 15 Acres of property, located in NE, Georgia for sale. Owner retiring.

I would be willing to bet that Joe Cogbill has finally decided to call it quits!

I went to their property awhile ago and I do think this is a good business oppurtunity. There were tons of parts located inside old chicken coops, so they were pretty protected. The parts were supposedly labeled by category for easy inventory control. In addition, they had a bunch of restoreable shells in the woods. These could probably be salvaged and moved indoors.

There was a pretty large garage area to either tear apart or rebuild cars. Also they had a good office complex.

I'm not sure what the price would be, but it would be nice to get this place back in shape for the south eastern folks!

It's been for sale for a couple of years now. He had an ad in Excellence for most of 2008. It just didn't tell you what business it was, but if you called the number they listed, even if you didn't leave a message they called you back. The call back number showed up on my caller ID as GAD when they called me back.

I know a few creditors will want a piece of the pie if he gets a buyer.

Anybody know what happened to these guys? I heard BAD things about them. But it would be great if somebody bought them out and cleaned up the operation as they are somewhat nearby.

Someone here should buy the place... and pay with a bad check.

Joe is still there, at least he was a few months ago. I personally have had good luck buying a few small parts from them but I always went there. It's a shame that there has been a lot of questionable transactions involving them. Joe is very knowledgeable and has a long history racing and working on Porsche's......

I have known and bought from Joe Cogbill over the last twenty years, like a lot of folks in the Atlanta area, and never had a problem. As Ben says, the way to buy from him is face to face at his Cleveland Ga location. Joe is a real affable guy in person, and he's been very helpful and generous with me. Back in '92 when I put a 3.6 into my '80SC, I could not have done it without his help locating and sourcing parts for me! (Patrick nor any other folks made the turnkey 3.6 swap kits back then) It is a shame that somehow he has sullied his name and reputation with questionable or outright bad dealings on Ebay, forums, and mailorder transactions.

A friend of mine got rusty dented parts that were suppose to be in "perfect" condition. I wouldn't buy parts from them unless I could go pick it up and see what I'm paying for.

Ditto Uwanna.....
I go way back with Joe when he was just off Buford Highway and his yard was smaller, but still a popular place to buy. Malcolm and David ruled the counter back then and were very helpful. I remember when I had my 944, these guys let me wonder the yard with a few tools and a shoe box and here I was plucking switches, bulbs, knobs, a fitting here and a small part there and gave me a price per box! Parts by the pound! Great deals, real life savers back then. When Joe moved up to Dahlonega he lost a few good folks due to the commute I guess but carried on with a killer parts inventory. Its correct to say that doing business in person was the better way to go with them, plus the ride up north on a saturday was beautiful. In my many years (decades) of dealing with these guys my experiences have been positive. I can see him retiring, he has been in the business since the 70's I believe. Hell of a race car driver with an impressive record to boot too. It has been disheartening to read about problems with Joe from others, but my experiences were indeed positive.

Actually I think the answer is yes. I have that name & number in my phone book and crossed thru with the current name & number.
NOT to be confused with the folks up in Ohio.

And I have to agree I had alwasy been treated fair and beyond that some times on used stuff.
Maybe it is being local, and stopping by, also mentioned years ago I had relatives just up the road.

Regards

Why? I assure you that owners of other models have had problems.

The stories all seem to be the same. If the transaction was by mail/phone/e-mail/eBay, the parts were described as perfect and what was received was far from it, if everything mentioned was even included. Then it was impossible to get what you thought you were paying for or get a refund. If the transaction was in person, it was smooth, cheap, and anything but a hassle.

GAD and PAP were linked at one time, but not any more. I have bought from both (PAP is now in Powell Ohio). PAP is all new parts. I have bought several items over the years from GAD for my old 924's along with a couple engine parts for my 911. The only problem I had was poor packaging on the 911 engine parts which resulted in a broken aluminum part. They replaced it, but it took a while and several phone calls.

I get parts next day with standard UPS ground from nearby PAP, so when in a pinch for Porsche parts in a hurry without paying crazy west coast UPS "next day air" prices, they have helped me out several times.

Before this thread gets shut down I'll just say do a search in the 911 forum. It's been beaten to death over there. These guys have a longer history of bamboozling people than MotorMeister.

My personal experience with them is that they were dishonest, evasive, underhanded and devoid of integrity. Perhaps they've changed and perhaps it didn't come from the top but was isolated to one or more underlings, but based on a long litany of similar stories I'll just say the evidence suggests otherwise.

People like this can't escape karma. They'll get theirs eventually.

He screwed me once and thats all it took. Won a Ebay auction and the jerk then refused to sell the parts for the agreed price.

Hope he gets screwed and royally like he did with his customers.

Exclamation These guys at German Auto dismantlers are crooks

He sent me the wrong part for my 968 and now wants to charge me a 25% restocking fee.

Stay away from this place at all cost and don't spend a penny at German Auto Dismantlers.

Worst service I have ever seen.
