Shootin' Lever Guns
I stumbled across these videos on YouTube. I swear, this guy must be my long lost twin brother that was separated at birth.

Very cool stuff. That guy clearly knows and is comfortable around his hardware too. Those are the kind of guys you can really learn from.
Pretty darned good shot too. He was dropping some of those targets pretty far downrange in the last video with only maybe 1/2 second worth of time to "bead in".

One of his videos has him ringing a steel gong at the end of that range with a baby glock!

Just got back from South Africa. Spent 3 days doing a game safari at a lodge on the border with Kruger national park. Our guide was a younger guy who probably went about 130lbs. Carried a .375 H&H in the bush. I commented that it must be not much fun practicing with it. He rolled his eyes and informed me that they had a pair of .458s on order, and that they were expected to be proficient in their use.

higgy im surprised you hadnt seen this before. wayyyyy cool and obviously he has practiced a hell of alot and as we all know....................accuracy speaks.
this guy is a shootist w/these levers as i am with a .308. its all about knowing yer round and yer spoon backwards forwards under any conditions. now with yer standard 405 grain we have the "rainbow" effect as far as trajectory. with these new leverevolutions the accuracy has been brought forward light years. after playing with the 24" barrel XLR marlin 45/70, i will proudly say that with the hornadays, scoped(leupold 3x9), and alot of practice it is an honest to gawd 300yd ELK ANCHORER! after 300yds, you better have practiced a hell of alot! since time hasnt allowed me yet to blast the hell out of my 1895GS w/18.5" barrel, i will have to say since im not scoping it, it will be a damn good 150yd stop any D-10 DOZER, T-REX, URSUS HORRIBLIS, TERADACTYL vaporizer. unless in big azzd bear country i will just use the hornaday 325 gr for elks/deers. once we get the reloader we can play with mad doktor late night concoctions and see what else we can come up with as far as distance accuracy. when i saw this vid.............................yep he was my long lost amigo also. thats how WE SPELL FUN HERE IN AIRY-ZONEY! watching it again makes me wanna cut out from turkey day monyana, and go blasting...................but that would look real bad, like i dont care about family, or holidays.....................which i dont actually care for at all. too much drama.

Yeah, I can't believe it took me so long to find these, either.
The similarities in our respective approaches just amazes me. Not only is he shooting mostly the same guns I shoot, but he has also fitted most of his lever guns with the XS Sight Systems "ghost ring" sights. I've sung their praises here before - I don't think there is a better sight for these guns. I love watching him shoot black powder in the '73. While .45 Colt is not a "historically correct" caliber for that gun, the modern replicas in that caliber have it all over the .44-40's and .38-40's. Both of those are bottlenecked so they cannot be reloaded with carbide dies, and both have notoriously thin cases that like to buckle when flaring or crimping. The .45 Colt has none of those problems. Notice his use of the short little M29 Smith. I'm right with him on this one as well - there is simply no need for the long barrels found on a lot of revolvers. They just get in the way. All but two of my single actions wear 4 1/2" or 4 5/8" barrels, and I've never felt handicapped by their short length and decreased sight radius. They sure are a lot handier to have around, though. Yup, all in all, a man after my own heart. He's having a lot of fun with his "obsolete" guns, and showing just what they are capable of in practiced hands.

yeah i love my 1894's in .357 and .44 mag. perfect home/castle doctrine. unloading 9/10 rounds of either .44 mag or .357 on a bad guy breaking in doesnt make the news as would an "assault" rifle. which in reality they were and STILL ARE!
the keys to these and any lever gun when buying them new or old. clean them completely. pull bolt out and clean w/q-tips,lubricate, work action while watching orca or ellen and do it until yer hand falls off to work action loose. wild west guns makes a (1) piece extractor instead of factory (2) piece extractor. wild west guns makes an aluminum mag tube follower red anodized. disassemble mag tube, replace with brownells chrome silicone mag spring. clean the hell out of mag tube with swabs and ever so lightly lubricate. on all (4) of our marlins new there was a alot of crap from mfg. still in mag tube. and grit aint good in the mag tube. wild west guns also does a trigger for these but i opted after shooting all (3) now quite a few rounds to take them into nelsonford thegunsmith.com and have him do his "BETTER BUTTERER MO BETTERER" lever job and they are (1) finger ZERO EFFORT levers and nice crisp triggers w/out any slop. im still torn btwn the XS sights and the williams sights. crap i have to do (3) of them, so i better get it right. the other 1895XLR already has the leupold 3x9 and its dead nutz and already has a 3x4 elk notched on the handle from my younger sons elk killing spree.(redrum). gawd we loving MURR-DURR-ING ELK.........its a NEANDERTHAL THANG! as i mentioned before, im still on the lookout for a stainless 336 in .30/.30. what the hell ya cant have enough, especially if n.korea gets uppity and wants to invade airy-zoney! (perfect excuse to use to wifey huh?)

I typically disassemble my guns and polish the internals with 400-600 grit wet and dry, using a light gun oil. I pretty thoroughly deburr everything and break all the sharp edges that shouldn't be sharp. That does wonders for the newer guns. On the older ones, they used to do that for you. There is nothing better than a slick lever gun that practically works itself. There is nothing worse than one that sticks, clunks, grinds, and bruises the backs of your fingers. Newer Marlins are way better than most, but still not as good as the older, hand-fit rifles.
I would be more afraid of a guy with a well broken in lever gun handed down through dad and grandpa than I would be of some clown with a decked out "tactical" AR15/AK47/ whateverthefukk. A man in a pair of jeans and an olf flannel shirt who knows his lever gun will make short work of the fool in his tactical costume with all the latest must-have gee-gaws hanging off of his rifle. The guy in the videos demonstrates that quite nicely.
