a teenage male is already on steroids - don't add anything artificial (except maybe protein powder)

Roman situps - it's what all the smoke-jumpers did while the rest of us partied

your best bet is to take a college course in wt. training and talk to your instructor

one tip: don't neglect flexibility training

tip #2 - don't neglect the small muscle groups; e.g. dumbells, not just barbells, and not just machines

I'm 25 and I can eat a cake and lose a lbs. I'm almost the same weight I was in high school.

Mine hasn't slowed yet!

45 and I am still the same size I was in school. But I do watch what I eat and my job keeps me in shape.

That's not a body you'll build a line backer type physique from without illegal substances. Face that first and learn to be fine with it. I would recommend boxing over wrestling - a slender physique will be quite competitive in the lower weight classes (where speed and reach count). A good boxing program 3+ days a wek will get you in shape where you won't have anything to hide at the beach. Not weighing 200+ pounds is actually going to be a good thing for your health in the long run. I know a lot of former body builders that look like the Michelin man later in life.

And on a final note: Forget about the six pack. Even in my best athlete days I had a flat stomach. You would have to go on a special diet and exercise program to produce that effect. And you will still get laid without it ...

Just my two cents.

George

Not sure this has been said because I browsed only the first two posts . . . I worked for as a trainer for fifteen years and trained as a body builder for many more. Having said that, I have two suggestions and a few helpful hints:

1. Do not use steroids. Everyone I know who used them, myself included, end up regretting it after the fact due to several different reasons. Go as far as you can with natural gains and learn to be content.

2. Work your legs harder and more often than your upper body (break up the legs into three major groups and you'll find you can do more). Legs need a lot of stimulation to grow and you'll look much better than the idiots who simply focus on the bench. I suggest starting with a Smith machine and squats.

Increase your protein intake but don't spend all your money on supplements. Lightly boiled egg whites and plain broiled chicken breasts work well, too.

A word of warning: if you have any tendency towards obsession, I highly recommend not getting into this activity. It can become overwhelming very quickly and overshadow everthing else.

Great advice from George & Scott. You have to look at what you are and have naturally. It's true that most guys can eat to their heart's content when they're young, but quickly find out one day they have gained a lot of weight and haven't even noticed. Once you gain weight when you are older, it's hell to get rid of it. For a long term perspective, you want to maintain a high level of health and fitness into your later years - and believe me, if you're lucky, you will find yourself in your "later years" someday. Listen to those who have already been through it. If you want to complete with bigger guys by building yourself up to their level of size and strength, you have to understand they had it naturally, and while you have to build up to their specifications and get into shape, they only have to get into shape. So what George said about an activity like boxing is totally true, and what Scott said about a body building activity is also totally true. Wrestling is a great sport that will build strength, flexibility, coordination and provide fun competition, but you should try to target your general weight class instead of trying to build up to something your're not. A friend of mine in high school started out as the manager for the wrestling team. One day the coach convinced him to try wrestling. He did and ended up winning the state title in the 156 weight class. Later in life, he had a career as a high level manager for a big company, didn't exercise at all and became the usual sloppy looking middle aged guy. That example shows how a person can sometimes become way more than they think, but can end up like the normal slob if they don't take care of themselves as years go by. If he had gone the body building route, he would be even worse off.

HAHAHA! Pretty sharp, kid. Picked right up on that, eh?
Smart enough to stick around for the good advice too.
I think you'll do just fine.
