Mini = front drive = doesn't meet his criteria

If for some reason it did, 2008's with ~20K miles are available well under $15K

It took 3 pages, but finally a suggestion for a Mini! Yes, it's a FWD, but it's an awesome car, and doesn't have that FWD feel at all. Definitely get an S if (should be easily within budget). They're awesome cars - full backseat and still some storage space in the back, excellent gas mileage, and tons of fun when you want them to be. Can't speak highly enough about them.

Hmm, I'd be interested in one of those. I was looking at ~05's and it seems they are 12k+ around here.

We looked at minis for a long time... Then came to our senses and got the E36 M.... IMHO a much nicer car. Try driving your mini sideways with the rears smoking!

And I love a fun FWD as much as the next guy, I just love RWD more....

My $0.42:

W202 or W212 C-class -- very good, solid cars, especially the AMG's. As noted above - some have reliability issues, but most of those issues have been worted out by now. My friend has a C43 AMG - really a gem.

Subaru Legacy - I had a '95 for 13 years and nearly 200k miles. Dead reliable and you could beat the snot out of it. With AWD, if driven the right way, you could get the back end to wag a little, especially in less-than ideal grip conditions. Just a warning - be leary about a used WRX for a too-good-a-price tag: some of those have been used and abused by young drivers!

-Z-man.

A 996 has four seats. After owning one, I can't think of a better daily driver. My 986 rocks too, but it doesn't have those two pretend back seats.

Salvage was only due to theft 10years ago, car has never been crashed...I would not hesitate to jump on this.

I really like the late model AMG wheels on that 500E, give it the right stance

This one looks great as well (but it's not 8,500).

No salvage cars. Most buyers come resale time do not share your sentiments.
