Sounds to me like the guy was being stupid. No hose attached. He must have been waiving this thing to get called in as a "gunman". Cops show up and get this pointed at them? I am sorry, but I can see why he got shot. Most times in Long Beach a crazy drunk guy in the appartment yard won't be pointing a garden nozzle at you ...

Sounds like a case of shoot first, ask questions later. No commands and they just start shooting? I hope LBPD can afford this lawsuit.

Obviously, we weren't there, and don't know the exact situation. It's entirely possible that the guy was trying to get killed, and acting like he could/was going to shoot them. Suicide by cop, it happens.

For me, if the option is 1 Crazy guy dead or 2 Cop dead, I'm voting for option 1 every time. Obviously, there is an option 3, very bad accident, some not so crazy, not so bright guy/kid gets killed in a tragedy. Well, I don't think anyone would ever vote for that option.

There may be better ways, in fact I'm sure there are. This guy had a long history of drunkenness and rehab. No telling exactly how he was behaving. The chief of police is saying the guy had the hose nozzle between his hands just like you'd hold a pistol. And that he raised the nozzle up as if to shoot. We'll see. |

Eyewitness on the news said that he heard the cops identify themselves and order him to drop the weapon. The cops were responding to a "man with a gun" call.

Guy was drunk, which didn't help his judgement. Apparently he held up the nozzle with two hands, as if it was a gun. Who knows what was said (or not) by the cops? Sad story.

I was watching a documentary on the Secret Service two weeks ago. A retired agent was telling a story about guarding Ronald Reagan's motorcade coming through some small town when one of the onlookers, a teenager, raised what looked like a pistol and pointed it toward one of the vehicles. SS agent had his Uzi trained on him, was seconds away from killing this kid when he realized the kid had a squirt gun. They later found out the kid had done it on a dare. Amazing how they can show such restraint, yet local cops get a "man with a gun" call, which any equally crazy person could have made, and kill the guy without even verifying the gun. Unreal. Too bad the lawsuit won't be paid out of the cops' paychecks or pensions.

Hesitating to shoot a kid in a crowd is a little different that a drunk man. I would not point my finger at a cop in that situation.

your "SS Agent" probably had ONE (1) shoot/don't shoot in his entire LE career and he chose not to shoot. Yipee. Did he "show restraint" or was he too scared s h it -less to pull the trigger and eliminate the threat? Hard working "local cops" in high activity/high crime areas in Southern California (like Long Beach) experience several "shoot/don't shoots" per year. Sometimes several times in one month. Hey Rick, you ever work a 14 day gang sweep???? I didn't think so. Ever do a parole search on a criminal outlaw motorcycle gang location and confront a room full of Ex-Cons with immediate access to multiple weapons??? I didn't think so. Tonight, while I'm out trying to keep a neighborhood safe, if I confront a subject whom I perceive to be an armed suspect and I shoot and kill him, only to find out later that he was actually pointing a cell phone at me, I can only hope that you aren't sitting on my jury. I know that almost all citizens respect the job that I do and give me the benefit of the doubt that I will do it to the best of my ability. And thanks for the final insult about the officer's "paycheck and pension" being forfeited to pay the lawsuit settlement. Have a nice day, Rick.

It amazes me that some of the guys on here that go everywhere armed(little winkies?) and would most likely be the first among us to draw down and drop someone, are the first to cry foul when an officer defends his life and the lives of others from a perceived threat.
