This'll keep kids off his lawn...

Man gets probation in dog-lawn murder - Chicago Breaking News

A University Park man who killed a neighbor whose dog urinated on his lawn was sentenced today to four years probation.

Charles Clements, 69, a great-grandfather, former Marine and retired truck driver who took great pride in his lawn's appearance,
could have been sentenced to as much as 20 years.

Joshua Funches, 23, was walking his fox terrier puppy when Clements confronted him after the dog urinated on his manicured lawn.

After Funches cursed at him, Clements pulled out a .45-caliber handgun and put it back in his pocket. Soon after, Funches punched Clements once in the face. Clements said Funches was standing still when he pulled out his gun and fatally shot him.

I've heard of "road rage"...
Its sad that the kid is dead but he was either an idiot, too full of himself or all of the above. The 23 yr old reminds me of folks online that are always going off with a bunch of macho bravado over some situation and mouthing off on how they'd give the offending party a beat down.

My neighbors like to let their dogs crap and pee in my yard despite multiple polite conversations with them, some days this solution is tempting. What is it with dog owners? The world is not a toilet for your pet.

Punch a guy in the face when you know he has a .45 in his pocket? Talk about stupid.

100% true story time...

Back in 86, my best pal's yard was getting turfed almost every other week. His mom, who is truly one of the funniest people around, go totally fed up with it and took it upon herself to deal with it. So....

She gets four 2 X 4s and hammers a bunch of spikes in them. Then, she spray paints them green. Night comes, she goes out and secures them on the front lawn. Tru to form, these kids came roaring down the road onto their yard and KERBLAM...all 4 tires are blown but the kids not wanting to get caught keep right on going on through the yard, onto the road and take off

Now, they ended up finding out who the kids were because one of the neighbors up the street had these tools do the same to his lawn, and jumped in his car when they did it, saw the car go across my friend's lawn, and followed them up the road. Of course they did not get far and were at the nearby gas station will all 4 flat tires. The neighbor dude gets the kids out of the car and it turns out they are the the 3 Dietz brothers. BTW, the Dietz brothers are big, Bigger and Hold CRAP that dude is BIG. The neighbor being and adult basically dresses them down knowing full well who they are and the cops are called.

Now, the cops get to the neighborhood and are checking out the damage and stuff...a cops sees those 2 x 4's and asks "maa'm, what the hell are those?" From what my bud tells me, she looks the cop right in the eye and said "well sir, those are my 2 x 4's with big nails in them painted green and attached to my lawn"....that's all she said totally smiling at the cop. Apparently the cop did his best to stop the huge smile spreading across his face, said he had to run up to the gas station and that when he got back he was sure that the boards and spikes would be gone....most amusing.

Good story Roosterrusek.

Also illustrates the difference between good policing and following the letter of the law.

I'm actually surprised by the ruling. But then the shootings (with just cause) in the Chicagoland area of late have had favorable outcome for the shooter w/regard to the law. Chicago cops not pressing charges when there's the slightest bit of evidence that it was self defense..as oppose to lock them up, process them and let the judge decide.

Yep, this is pretty much a textbook case of what not to do according to my CCW class.

But the mood of the public is encouraging. Maybe we will get CCW eventually.

(Not to get to political...)

I could see Rahm championing CCW as a way to throw conservatives critics off his back.

A guy I knew a long time ago had a beautiful lawn on a corner lot. He paid a lot of money to a landscaping company to have a gorgeous yard. Some local kids would come through and trench up his yard about the time it was back to perfect. After the second time he had the landscaping company install steel bars with sharp spikes about 4 inches under the sod.

Sure enough the ashhat kids come through again and the tires were shredded. The dumb ass kids bail out to go home to get a bigger pickup to tow it out of his yard. The home owner just happed to live next door to a man that owned a wrecker company. They promptly had the truck hauled off to the impound lot and lost the paperwork. Somehow before the wrecker even got there all the windows were smashed out. The car sat in the back of the impound lot filling up with rain while the homeowner who was was a well connected lawyer kept the car's owners looking for the car. The car sat in the impound lot long enough to be declared abandoned and was sold as scrap.

Sprinkle chilli powder everywhere. Dog will take one sniff and never return. Works for cats to.

I agree onewhippedpuppy--what is up with dog owners that encourage their pets to piss and shyt on other people's property???

I own and love dogs. I make it a point to train ALL my dogs to NEVER poo or pee while I walk them. Come on people, train your damn dogs or don't walk them on people's lawns!

It is horrible to think someone lost their life over this. But, damn, people need to pull their heads out and stop allowing their dogs to use other peoples yards as a potty box.

Argh!!!

In the case of my neighbors, they open their patio door (on our side of their house) and let the dogs out. When I mention that I found more poo in my yard (on my foot) their answer is always the same. "Really?! Our dogs normally don't ever leave our yard. We're so sorry, they're just getting used to the new yard." You freaking morons, the dogs didn't survey the freaking property when you moved in 6 months ago. So long as you sit on your ass and simply release the dogs into the yard, they're never going to learn ANYTHING! So I just pick up the poo with a shovel and throw it back into their yard in high traffic areas, I hope they find it the same way I do.

Just tell them you like to work on cars and sometimes you leave antifreeze in containers waiting for recycling. It would be a shame if their dog got into on ofthe container and drank it.

Or some wet paint in a tray with a tasty bit near by in your yard. Won't be long after the dog tracks paint into their house before they get it together.

If they don't respect you and your property now, they never will. Forget being friendly.

Disrespectful neighbors is one of the reason I moved out of the burbs.

We walk our dogs and I just can't get worked up about our dog peeing on a yard. If the dog take a dump, we have a bag to pick it up and bring with us.
