Platform to work on House

I bet some of you guys know what these cool jack-up platforms are (?)

What keeps it in place? It does not touch the rain gutters. Is the blue thing rigid? I assumed the blue "ties' were ropes, but I can't figure out how that would work...

BTW - James if you read this, that is the neighbor who is putting in the PV cells - he told me it will pay back in 10 years. The house is also super insulated with one 2x4 wall inside of another 2x4 wall about a foot away from each other. And, the bio-diesel Jetta guy owns the house next door.

Those are called 'pump jacks'. The upper blue piece in the pic gets attached to the house in a 'V' pattern. This is supposed to control side-to-side movement. The lower blue piece with the black stirrup is the jack. You put your foot in the stirrup and pump. The platform will walk up and down the 4x4 risers. You need to jack both sides. I bought a set when I built my house. Tried to use them once, didn't have the bulls for it. Pretty scary if you're not used to it. They sold at our last garage sale.

Red has it right. Pump jacks have been around for a long time. From the video above, you can see they are using 2x4's for poles and 2x's for walk boards. That's a big no no and probably an old video (I hope). I've seen them at an angle and all sorts of stuff. I've climbed regular scaffolding 40' or so and that was enough for me.

They are usually tied on top of the roof via the bracked you see at the top of the aluminum poles.

He probably attached the lanyard to the harness itself. He's also supposed to have two planks to stand on, not one.

He's not wearing a harness, that's the suspenders holding up his tool belt.

No rails, no harness, no mattress on the ground, not very safe!
