School me on the X5.
I am thinking about getting a used X5 for the wife.
Tell me the pros and cons.
Any years better than others.
Will probably go CPO for the warranty

How old were you thinking? The big change occured in 2007. If you have tried a search you'll find a ton of threads from the past. Many here have owned them. Generally, people like them. Don't rule out a Porsche Cayenne as they are just dirt cheap right now.

With petroleum prices forecast to rise sharply over the next 12-24 months and no decline in sight, I'd avoid any large-ish vehicles at all for the time being.

If gas goes to $5 a gallon (it will in the next couple of years most likely), the prices/values of large pick-em-ups and SUVs are going to crater. Nobody will be able to afford to drive them.

Remember, it's not the up-front costs you need to concern yourself with. It's the recurring ones.

If you've already decided that you want a euro SUV/CUV, then which years and models were you considering? How many miles were you thinking? Which engine(s)? What price range?

The X1 is coming to the US in early 2011. It's the 4cyl. diesel SUV. My wife fell in love with one in Germany. But I think it was because we had gotten used to paying their cheaper diesel prices in our own rental car there. Diesel ain't cheaper in the US.

I just can't even imagine the cost of driving a large, powerful vehicle in Europe. Any V-8 SUV or big sedan, (MB S-class), would be $1k per month in fuel for moderate usage.

Wife currently drives a Honda Odyssey
She doesn't want to be a minivan mom anymore.
She is spoiled by the room of the minivan.
She says a car won't have enough room for the kids and their stuff.
The X5 seems to have more room than the Lexus RX
She has had the same car for so long I think I I have to get her something a little more on the higher end. I think she is bugged that my DD has NAV, XM IPOD she only has a CD, and I have the 911

So I don't want to spend alot of money but she is guilting me into getting her something upscale.

We've had an '03 and an '06. Both were with the 3.0 six cylinder motor. That is the only way to go, IMO. Personally I like the original model, up through 2006.

Very reliable, expect similar MPG to the Odyssey but on mid-grade gas. AWD is excellent. Very comfortable, especially on road trips. I would buy one again, but as others have already said, go in eyes wide open with expected gas prices.

Forget the model year...my retired Pilot friend has an X5 with the 3.0 six...he loves it!

You might look at the 3.0L X3 as well. Suprpisingly similar room/space as the X5, handles a bit better (the sport pkg models are rather stiff), and MPG in the low 20's.

I'm looking to replace our 2000 X5 with a 2009 or later X5 35d, which gets 28 mpg highway, and is diesel.

I would LOVE a 5 door 1 series diesel, like I drove in Spain summer of 2007. But BMW is a luxury brand here and they seem to refuse to bring in any of the small, thrifty vehicles.

I recently detailed one of them it was a 2009 with 25K Miles, I've seen this SUV on the road but really never paid too much attention to it, as I understood by the owner this vehicle was in the 70s when new, this particular model had every option available from almost the entire roof in glass to seated air conditioned seats indeed a very nice ride, according to the owner the thing is a fuel sucking machine.

The 4.8 V-8 is a MPG pig. On the highway, running 70-75mph, I would routinely get 22, 23mpg. Not bad for such a large, AWD car.

Run 85 mph, my 2000 X5 4.4 does 19-20. Around town, 14.

Friend has (had) an early X5...

It was on it's third transmission. (Everything else was great, tho.)

When I have time I can tell you why I would never buy another BMW if you like. If I was to do it again, I would buy low miles under warranty, and sell before warranty is expired, unless you have tons of disposable income. Other than that it is a blast to drive when it runs.

I owned a 4.6is for a few years. This was the "M" version of the X5 although they couldn't call it that. It had 350hp and 20" wheels. I picked it up used and I think it was over $75k new. Thanks to G Bush and the SUV tax write off, I was able to deduct half of the price off the car that year.

Ahh, the good old days. The X5 was a great car and I had no complaints about them at all. I outgrow the size of the car with my family of 6. The later X5's have a 3rd row, but it really is a compromise if you need the additional seating. At least for the 4.6is, I could chase my brother in his 911 from a stoplight and he could never shake me.
