$799 - Slate

Windows Pro 7 (tablet control and voice command are part of Win 7 Pro)
Wifi
SD Card slot (32GB of disk expansion)
1 USB slot

2 core 1.8MHZ Intel Atom processor

I don't think I'll buy an iPad 64GB. Even the 16GB seems too expensive. The only thing that seem better from the iPad specs is battery life is about double.
It sounds like the Slate, and what you were looking for was essentially a laptop replacement. I use a desktop at the house, and have a company laptop, what I wanted was basically a huge version of my phone without the ability to make calls. I use my ipad to read books, surf the web, play simple games, watch movies (including output to a TV), occasionally email and/or IM, for that, the ipad is great. I got it last Aug. I think that within a year there will be some really rocking Android based devices that will be better and more enjoyable for me, but you can pretty much always wait " in 2 years, X will be out and will blow it away" which is always true.

Absolutely there is fully featured RDP for iPads AND iPhones. I worked with a guy at my last job who could VPN into our network from his iPhone and then RDP into servers and work/fix stuff when he was on call, all from his iPhone.

I'm absolutely NOT an Apple iStuff fanboy. I like my iPad, but I'm not completely infatuated. Frankly, I am more of an Android fanboy and wish there had be a really great Android based alternative, but there wasn't and there still isn't so instead of waiting for 1-2 years for that to materialize, I got the iPad which is great for what I need. The battery life is really nice too. That's the one place where I expect the Android devices to fall down compared to the iPad.

And are you saying that if someone wanted to run photoshop, or video editing, they would do that on their ipad? . . .the ipad is just like a workstation.
tablet != workstation.

Wow, personal attack because I faulted your love?

And apparently you believe that if the ipad had a more trim bezel, it would have failed. Or, if it were the pocketable size of the Samsung tab it would have failed. Or, if it ran OSx it would have failed. Or, if it had an integral kickstand it would have failed.

yeah, if I made product decisions...

btw I would have Never had a bare antenna at a touch point. ... idiots

The Slate is definitely envisioned for a different market. It is sold by the Business Division of HP. I wasn't looking for a Laptop replacement, but a netbook replacement. And it is.

We gave away one of our netbooks to a family member. I still need my Notebook for serious work. But for walking around mobile computing, the Slate is Slick.

Funny, I don't understand why Jobs hates Netbooks so much.

I guess I could have not used your name/handle, but that wouldn't make your track record any better.

That's easy. Low-priced commodity market, no room for AAPL to earn big profit margins. When things are cheap and standardized, AAPL loses.

Can you blame them? It doesn't fit their business model... They aren't in the business of helping you, they are in the business of making money.... They are VERY good at making money....

Where Apple products are concerned, no-one can compete with you for a perfect record of wrong bets . . . Doesn't it embarass you at least a little? As a packaging engineer, aren't electronic devices supposed to be sort of in your area of expertise?

like so many OT threads, this one answered his Q and went on to discuss alt. soln's. As Red points out the State gives great price/performance . But, since the OP just needs web /email I suggested one of the less expensive devices.

btw Where did I say ipads Suck?

okay I'll bite - since you obviously really want to tell me. - just what have I been so wrong about? ...specifically.
