The Chinese make good parts washers, but buying them is human trafficking, you may only employ them.

I bought a 25 gal parts washer from HF. Used mineral spirits for cleaner. Worked well, but a filtering system would be nice. It comes with a green 3m scotchbrite pad as a filter. I plumbed in a Ford filter, but it clogged up in a heartbeat.
One that's sits in a drum to let the particulates settle would be best IMHO. |

Cogito Ergo Sum

We have a home made job. Not too hard, nice big porcelain sink, stand, barrel, and pump. We have a 15gal barrel with the raised off the bottom, and plumbed in a BIG fram fuel filter along with scotchbrites in the drain to catch the big bits. One trick with the raised pump is to put water in the bottom to just below the pump level. The theory is that the water and solvent wont mix, and the big bits will settle down into the water.

While probably made in China, I have used one of these from Harbor Freight for over 15 years using mainly mineral spirits. Still works fine.... These things are pretty simple. I am not really sure what advantage there would be to pay more money for one if we are talking simple non-heated non agitating parts washers. But to each their own.

Tim, I have that same exact parts washer. its about 25 yrs old. One of the best "cheap, POS" investments I ever made. I just put a new pump in it. 25 yrs of very hard use. Not bad for "Made in China garbage" I always used mineral spirits cut with some ATF.

I just bought one of these with a 30" turntable for my shop, it is supposed to ship in two weeks. These things will strip the paint off an engine block in a few hours.
Didnt spring for the stainless model though, I wanted to but an extra $9k was too much. It's prolly a little too much for a garage: ![]() ![]() |

That's what I use for my Porsche alloy castings. I got it second hand for $40.
Connect up the hose and power and switch it on to "intense" with dish washing tablet. Works beautifully. But I've never used it for any cast iron engine parts. I first got the idea back when I was married. I used the one in "our" kitchen. Please don't do this ![]()

I gave that up years ago when my job exposed me to UAW factory workers.

The machine uses hot water with a small amount of caustic detergent made for it, I don't have a copy of the MSDS yet but this is their sales hype on it:
