GL450. Its a real nice vehicle. Unbelievably high MPG's and the quietest smoothest ride I've experienced. NOT boaty at all, just a smooth air ride. All wheel independent. Made right here in America. Oh and did I forget the sound of the Mercedes V8 engine

Basically a stretched ML with airmatic air ride.

Example:

Here's a 2007 Mercedes Benz GL450 4Matic currently offered by Mercedes Benz Financial in CA (there are a bunch there next week).
Lifelong CA car, no paintwork, NAV, center bench, split fold third seats, 56K miles
Graded 3.8 of 5.0 in condition (above average)
They estimate it will bring $30,600 wholesale

4.7L DOHC aluminum V8 uses timing chain
335 hp @ 6000 rpm
339 ft-lbs @ 3000 rpm
EPA rated 13 mpg city / 17 mpg freeway

Tell me about the "unbelievably high MPGs". 17 mpg highway is unbelievable?

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice SUV. It's just that I'm driving a V-8 Touareg right now and it's about $20 a day if I don't go far from home and light-foot it. And city MPG is all that matters to me. 99%+ of my driving is on surface streets.

Really? I don't think you know what I have been doing for the last few decades to support myself.
I also stopped buying into the concept of the big three building things that they say I want. Cheap plastic, ugly designs, and built in obsolescent. But that is another thread.

SUVs..........

I currently have a 2003 Ford Excursion w/the 6.0 Diesel engine. At approx. 130k the only mechanical problem required having the turbo removed and cleaned of carbon build up. On the highway it gets about 21 mpg and in town about 16 -17 mpg. A great vehicle, one that I will never sell as there is simply no replacement for it. I also have a 2006 Ford F150 pickup that I bought used about 2 years ago. Again, no mechanical problems at all! Of course it only has about 48k miles so far. The new Ford Explorer is built on the Taurus chassis and is much lighter and fuel efficient than the last model. It also is supposed to get much better fuel mileage. As long as the Ford Motor Company continues to build quality vehicle such as these, there is no reason for me to have any interest in a Japanese or Korean built vehicle. Oh yes, I also have a 1980 911SC coupe, but I was talking about normal mortals vehicles, not the chariots of the gods!

I'm guessing that you spend your time trying to install izuzu parts on suburbans.

I've got 260k on my Tahoe, has a few things that need attention but for the most part it's been flawless. I'd buy another in a heartbeat. I still take it on occassion 500 miles in each direction to UT to hunt and ski...

I am as red white and blue as they come, I am just not going to give my hard earned money for a vehicle that is substandard.
Domestic vehicles are sub standard, and have been for a long time. Too bad, other then the greed factor there is no reason anybody should be out producing us, in quality or quantity.
To say I hate America is as far off base as you can possibly be.

You make your living fixing German cars when they break....... you'd have no work if they were flawless. So your position on American vehicles is hypocritical, at best.

The objective data is pretty conclusive. Domestics by far lead in quality and utility in large trucks and SUVs.

Used turbo diesel VW or Mercedes, preferably a 320 or 350 CDI will get you all the power you need and good mpg.

Otherwise, I know of a fully-loaded 2001 Denali with 11K miles for sale. PM me if you're interested.

Rofl. Considering that many "domestics" are made in Mexico and Canada, and many "imports" are made in America, perhaps you should temper your flag waving with some reality.

The fact of the matter is that the Big 3 make really good trucks and SUVs for the most part, especially GM. I'm sure that someone can come up with a lemon story to refute me but there are 100 stories like Todd's 260k mile Tahoe for every junk story. Suburbans and other Chevy trucks seem to run forever.
