Late hit yes, but shoulder to chest..... Warranted a 5min major, but that is it... Horton actually wanted to get up but the attending folks held him down.... I hope he is OK, which he appears to be.

I think Savard took a bite out of Carcillo last year didn't he??

At least Lucic manned up and had the balls to say his actions were classless.... good Vancouver boy right there...... Of course he had no choice seeing how his coach said they don't do stuff like that. But Recchi did the same thing earlier..... Then there is the water bottle squirting.... but whatever.

All fun and gamesmanship. All good!

After the Chara hit on the Montreal fellow (can't spell his name), Boston fans really can't get in an outrage about a late hit, can they??

Anyways, great series now, when it looked like it may not be. Should provide lots of entertainment for the fans on both sides. Everything I have heard, including from fans in Boston, is that the city of Boston is proving itself to be deserved of its stellar reputation. The city is looking beautiful on the TV coverage and from all accounts the people of Boston are proving welcoming and gracious to Canucks fans, unlike San Jose. So hats off and well done to the folks in Boston!

Rome: another class act along with Burrows. Hopefully the league will send a message. (Hawkeye: you need to tell the Canucks to quit the "goon tactics" and the diving.
One positive note: Malhotra is first Canuck behaving honorably for apologizing for the shot into the Bruin bench.
The Canucks squeaked out two close games. Game two should have been with Burrows in a suit and tie instead of being a key player. The Bruins got mad at all the stupidity and said "enough".
Well said Homer... umm watch the whole game. If you have a good point or two it is hard to see as it is lost in your tainted biased view of your team..... Of course when one reads your posts on this entire thread in regards to questionable behaviour by Bruins one can see the theme continues. You clearly are a Bruins fan, but not sure if you are a Hockey fan.

Enjoy the next home game..... it could be the last...

I think you need to watch the replay again, Jeff.
Contact would have been to Horton's chest if Rome hadn't left his feet to hit him.
I don't really want to see the game of hockey wussified, but this is something that needs to be taken out of the game. In the old days, this would have been self policed and eventually Rome would probably be out with some sort of an injury.
Horton should have been more aware before the hit, but he was without the puck for a few strides.
It should be interesting to see how this is handled and how the Canucks bounce back from game 3.
Vancouver should bring back the "Power Vee" jersey!

Huh? Every commentator and sports writer said it was dirty. The guy with the seeing eye dog in the top tier saw it was dirty. I'm afraid that you are a little biased there.

I was waiting for someone to bring that up. Yes he did and he was put to shame for it. That kind of thing happens in kindergarten.

That hit happened in during the peak of everyone being called for anything even remotely close to a dirty hit and Chara was cleared. If it was dirty they would have crucified Chara to make an example. The unfortunate problem was that Pacioretty hit the stanchion. Part of the final ruling may have been based on reputation. Chara is tough but a clean player. Burrows?

No question that I am a die-hard Bruin fan. I have even alluded to the fact that I am sure that I see things through Bruin tinted glasses. The reason I am comfortable refuting your claims is simple: Versus and ProHockeyTalk commentators state the same thing. There are times when I don't agree with the calls but the commentators confirm that I am wrong. Show me a professional writer who agrees that Burrows shouldn't have been suspended or that Rome's hit was clean. Lastly, there have been posts where I clearly complemented the team that opposed the B's. For example, I remember saying Roloson deserved to win game 7 the way he played. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Like you, I love the game but love it more when my favorite team wins. It is has been a great series from the start. Even the first two games were excellent-close, hard hitting, skilled. Just because VC wins by a goal in the last second or a gaff from Thomas doesn't mean that it wasn't a hard-fought game.

There are some things that made this so monumental:
-As I said before the cup series began, Luongo is streaky. He lost focus.
-"Fluke goal" Wow, that's the pot calling the kettle black. The game 2 winner was from a very lucky setup and bad defense from Boston.
-VC won the first two after a hard-fought game and then one goal at the wrong time for Boston. Game three was a total meltdown of VC. They even stopped playing the last minute or two which the Versus TV commentators said was low class. The fans paid for 60 minutes.

Darn! Is there anyone on this thread not from Canada? Aren't there any Pelicans in the USA NE?
Its hard to be the lone guardian of truth and unbiased opinions on this Stanley Cup series!

Win or lose, you gotta love the game.
p.s. No matter who wins, Gary Bettman is the anti-christ.

I am a casual fan, I don't really follow much during the season and enjoy playoff hockey as it seems the pace picks up and it is more exciting to me.

That being said, I can't see how anyone is calling this contact shoulder to chest. Stop the motion at contact and it is shoulder to side of head.

The reason I love TT

Style Points!

The only guy that was "his own man" more than Timmy was Hasek.
The sad part is that as per his reputation, it looks like Sedin embellished on the hit. Maybe he needs to apply for the Canadian Diving Team.

I think it was the combination it being clearly head shot and a late hit. The fact that Horton never saw it coming is secondary but does add to the indictment.

BOSTON - Vancouver Canuck defenceman Aaron Rome was handed a four-game suspension by the NHL today for his first-period hit on Boston forward Nathan Horton in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Monday night.

The decision, which means Rome will miss the remainder of the Cup final, was announced early this afternoon following a 20-minute hearing with the league.

A couple of hours before that hearing, the Bruins issued a news release saying Horton would miss the remainder of the Cup final with a "severe concussion."

"Two factors were considered in reaching this decision," Mike Murphy, the NHL's senior vice president of hockey operations, said today in a news release "The hit by Rome was clearly beyond what is acceptable in terms of how late it was delivered after Horton had released the puck and it caused a significant injury."

Rome will miss the remainder of the Stanley Cup Final series. In the event that the series ends before Game 7, the suspension will carry over to the start of the 2011-12 regular season.

Rome's hit on Horton was late and he appeared to catch the Bruins' winger on the chin. Horton fell immediately to the ice and remained there for several minutes while being attended to by several medical personnel and training staff.

He was eventually moved onto a stretcher, wheeled from the ice and transported to a Boston hospital.

"It's tough," Lucic said today of Horton's injury. "It's a big loss because he has been a big part of our team success. He has been a huge contributor to us making it this far. Everyone is going to have to step up and do a little bit more."

Boston coach Claude Julien said he supports the league's decision to suspend Rome for the four games, but noted he also supported the NHL when it chose not to suspend Vancouver forward Alex Burrows for the Game 1 biting incident.

"I like to leave things up to the NHL to rule on those things and you move on," Julien said. "I don't want that job to be honest with you. It's a tough job and I am one of those coaches who respect whatever they do. For people who thought I was disappointed with the Burrows thing, I moved on and in regards to this one here they made a decision and I think it is important for our whole league to protect our players from those kind of hits.

"Whether you agree or not, you support them. I supported them with the Burrows decision and I am supporting them with this one as well."

Rome's suspension means either Keith Ballard or rookie Chris Tanev will be inserted into the lineup for Game 4 on Wednesday night. The Canucks are already without injured defenceman Dan Hamhuis and Rome had been filling in for Hamhuis alongside Kevin Bieksa on Vancouver's shutdown defensive pair.

But the loss of Horton, who played alongside David Krejci and Milan Lucic on Boston's first line, is a significant loss for the Bruins. Horton hadn't done much in the series, but earlier in the playoffs scored two Game 7-winning goals for Boston.

Michael Ryder filled in for Horton for the remainder of Game 3.

Murphy met with reporters early this afternoon in Boston to explain his ruling.

"I probably viewed it like most of you did," Murphy said. "I thought it was a late hit, I thought the body was contacted, but I also thought the head was hit and it caused a serious injury to Nathan Horton. So the key components are the late hit and I had it close to a second late - we have out own formula at NHL hockey (operations) for late hits --and it was late and we saw the seriousness of the injury with Nathan on the ice.

"That is basically what we deliberated on. We tried to compared it with some of the other ones in the past, but it stands alone and that is why we made the ruling."

Go back one frame and you will see that in the pic you posted Rome is already rising up on the hit. If he wasn't doing it purposely then he must have been charging Horton to move that high in the air as a result of the contact.
Bottom line: the NHL said it was dirty. They didn't think that "Chewie" Burrows was worthy of a suspension and I disagreed on that one. "The NHL giveth and the NHL taketh away"

Sorry dude been busy today. I don't think the hit was a blind side per se but Rome definitely hit him late, rising up and to the head. Sure Horton should have been more aware but just the fact that it was a late hit resulting in serious injury is, in my mind, justification for sanction. Rome had a chance to square the shoulder and maybe cut his speed, or even raise a hand to ward off the blow. But he didn't. He gave it the full follow through as evidenced by the elbow rising after the hit. He deserves what he got.

There was a lot of "Sean Avery" crap going on last night. Embellishments galore. And Lucic's sneaky punch to the head was bush league. As was LaPierre's acting.

This should be a classic battle instead of the crap we saw last night. These guys are good enough to give us a grand spectacle without getting all WWF in the process.

No doubt that emotion got the better of the Bruins last night and they did some less than professional things

but diving and dirty hits are premeditated and a sign of bad character as opposed to temper.

Hopefully the rest of the series will have passion with honor.

Joe, do you think TT will stay more tethered to the paint now? He was tracking the puck amazingly well last night...and in the paint.

it was late and we saw the seriousness of the injury with Nathan on the ice.

It was an ugly start to an ugly game although Boston may take a small degree of satisfaction as to the way the game ended. I think the league has finally sent out a strong & clear message: "Guys! this $h1t has no place in our game & we intend to eliminate these types of dangerous & reckless styles of play". Aaron Rome, historically is not a 'dirty player', but he clearly crossed the line with that hit. I'm sure he was caught up in the 'heat of the moment', made a bad error in judgement & now has to pay the price. In the end, the hit was totally wrong & unjustifiable in any way shape or form so therefore, a major suspension was mandatory. The unfortunate part of the equation for Boston is that Rome is a career 4th set D-man while Horton is a top line forward. All of us who care about our game wish Nathan Horton a full & speedy recovery. It is also my hope the 'cooler' heads will prevail during the remainder of the series (may the passion always be there - paraphrasing Joe) & we'll have no more of that 'chippy-a$$ed' crap during the game & after the whistles.

Respectfully
JB

Honestly, no. TT is who he is and he got where he is by being aggressive. At this point its a reflex rather than a decision. He gets a lot of saves by being way out there. He paid one or two back in this series. He who lives by the sword... The B's wouldn't be where they are without his aggressive (and sometimes miraculous) saves. You gotta admit, never a dull moment with TT on the ice. We admire the percentages but we jump and shout over the diving saves. It makes for a good show.
