JJ and I made a wager last year and he was a man of honor when the Flyers beat the Habs. Care for a friendly wager? on your Bruins vs. my Flyers?

As I told JJ back on page two:
Quote:
JJ - I wish I could take you up on that one. I am an ex gambler (amongst other things). I am willing to make a public statement to the world as to how unworthy my team is if they are beaten by yours. Loser has to have the winning team's logo as their avatar for the remainder of the playoffs. Deal?
So I am willing to make the same offer to you. It should be an nice and easily identifiable logo. Since we are in round two, let's also add that the loser should have something appropriate under the name like "The Bruins Rule". Deal?

JJ: Nice avatar there. I wear my home game jersey here in TN. Loud and proud! The 3rd jersey (or a Bobby Orr replica) will be my next purchase.

The puck & the play were on the way to clearing the zone by then & Ference could have 'let-up'. The fact he'd squared up with his shoulder at contact (resulting in a whiplash effect) showed intent & should not be legitimized as a 'hockey play'. This was not incidental or accidental contact. It wasn't a particularly bright move & at the very least, was interference & could have had a more serious ending.
I will admit that he knew what he was doing when he made sure he was square for the hit. There was no respect there but that is nothing compared to the 70's with teams like the "Broad Street Bullies". If you want to talk about respect and honor then Matt Cooke is a candidate for an honor killing (I am not endorsing honor killing but you get the point). The B's count on their size to wear the other team down. Question: should every player have to get out of the way of a bad player that doesn't have the skill to look where he is going? No. There has to be accountability otherwise Halperin can skate around with his head down all the time and force players to get out of his way. We can't wussify the game down to playing no-touch hockey. Keep your head up and your stick on the ice and you will avoid most bad situations.

The point is that Ference went out of his way to hit him. He did NOT skate into Ference. Watch again if you think he did.

If your suggestion was correct there would not have been a disciplinary hearing, as with the Crosby hit.

There is no comparison to the game in the 1970's, taking a cheap shot at those great Flyers team has nothing to do with the way the game is played today and how the players should police themselves today. The Bruins just could not match up with the Flyers in those days but they were far from a clean hockey team at the time. How's Terry O'Reilly these days?

Funny how the league loathed the Flyers in those days but, when the Russians beat all the teams in the NHL and then came to Philly for their last game all of a sudden the entire NHL from the commissioner on down wanted the Flyers to beat the piss out of the Russians and uphold the honor of the NHL as the premier league in the world.

Looking forward to the game today!!!

My apology, there was no cheap shot intended. The Bruins were right there next in line for a bad azz reputation back then and it was part of what we all loved about our teams. That was back in the day when "men were men". We all admired the toughness of people like Terrible Ted, Mr. Hockey, etc... It ain't the 70's but there will always be the snarl and rivalries and its part of what makes hockey great.
You know where I'll be at 3 pm today. May the best team win (or in other words, the the refs call the game well). It really sucks when a game or even a series is affected or even decided on bad calls (but that's a different topic for another day).
Go Bruins.

I respect the opinion of several folks here who know their hockey and I will go watch it again.
Disciplinary hearing: they're doing that on practically every hit where the guy sits on the ice for more than 15 seconds. IMO, the league is having more hearing than usual to try to make the players realize that it is a new set of rules. Frankly, I am a proponent of the head shot/blind side rule after Cooke cost Savard the rest of his career and quite possibly the Bruins a Cup that year since he was their best Center and scorer.

Before becoming a born again Christian, I had a whole suite of bad habits... I couldn't keep even my own (super low) standards. It all changed for me in 1982 and I've never enjoyed life more than now.

Go Bruins.
No apology needed I misunderstood what you were getting at. Many of those Flyers still live in the area and they are legends here. I coached Bobby Clarke’s grandson for two seasons, talk about pressure, the kid’s father was an NHL player and his grandfather is an NHL Hall of Famer. There were some classic battles between the Bruins and the Flyers in those days.
I am in my 40th season as a player and I have coached at high levels for a long time too. I love the game, the pro game in the regular season can be a drag but playoff hockey is just fantastic. Looking forward to a great series.

Were you around back in the day when Ted Greene got tomahawked by Wayne Maki? That was ugly.

The scary part was that it was an exhibition game. Back then spearing and chopping happened quite a lot. Its a wonder that there weren't more career ending injuries. Of course there wasn't a whole lot known about concussions back then...smelling salts and get back out there.

True Porsha true but aside from the outright fouls etc, back then they weren't football players on skates either.

Heck of a performance by TT today. Some brilliant saves.

Round two, game one is in the books.
To borrow a phrase from the Clinton campaign "Its the goalie, stupid". I'm not endorsing Mr. Clinton or calling anyone stupid but there's no doubt that the goalies decided the game.
I am wondering how many games it will take for Pronger (or Carcillo) to get thrown out. They looked rather tense.

I don't think Pronger will. For the record there is no other team in the league I dislike as intensely as Philly but ...Pronger has been showing real leadership of late. Just today he cooled one guy off when he was about to do something stupid after a call against Boston. Carcillo however is highly likely to go...probably for embellishing or diving.

Actually, I think "It's the whole team, stupid". A lot of guys standing around watching a lot of Boston goals. Pick it up or go home in four.
