Early to bed , early to rise, is this a sign of getting old?

I have always been a night person, hated getting up in the morning, but could easily stay up all night. Last 3-4 years though, I get up every day, between 5:30- 6 am and am ready to go. Rarely even make the eleven o clock news at night anymore. I used to love to burn the midnight oil on project cars , but now I fee I do my best work early in the morning. Maybe it is because I have a family now, not sure.

15 years ago, I played drums in a band. We would play 3-4 shows a week. A lot of shows were out of town and by the time I got home, it would be 4:00 a.m. so I would just stay up because I would have to be at work at 7:00 a.m. I still had all of my equipment in the campershell of my truck. I'm now 47 and I wake up at 3:30 a.m. to be at work by 5 a.m. I usually stay up until 10:00 every night. I seem to function best on 5 hours of sleep. Any more than that and I'm really groggy all day. I work 6 days a week and Sunday is my only day off. Every Saturday night at 11, I build a fire in my back yard and enjoy the time by myself. I usually go to sleep at 3 in the morning and wake up at 9. I never use an alarm clock. I just wake up on my own, even during the week. My wife says I'm a machine.

It is part of getting senile. I would work hard against it.

I do have trouble sleeping past 10 am on a weekend these days. I could do 1 pm easily in the past. If I would not work however, I'd revert back to the college schedule in no time.

I always seem to wake up pretty early. About 6 or 7 hours and I am good, but will wake up after a few hours if I get to bed late.

My life as a Surveyor meant I was up early and u at work by six, when I sleep past six now I feel like I am cheating. I even get up at six on weekends. But you need to get to the car gatherings early.

I feel ashamed if i get up late, especially when I'm at home (I work away from home.) at home, it's 7am if I went to bed at 10pm or 4am.

I can do early to bed and early to rise, and I can do late to bed and late to rise. I can't do late late to bed and early to rise more than once/week. THAT is definitely getting old. My recovery period is getting longer...damn!

im am old...70... but i was not always so! i have been getting up early since i was a kid...i personally think that it is one of the best habits that one can have in life...and to pass it along to the kids in the family. i am always up before six regardless of when i go to bed...but as a general rule i get to bed by ten or ten thirty.

I go to bed early-ish (10:30-11:00) and get up at 5:30 for work. I don't particularly care for it. I could very easily stay up late, and often do on the weekends. I also sleep in as late as the dogs let us on the weekends, but thats usually only 9 or 9:30. I could still easily be a stay up until the wee hours and sleep all day person. I seem to function decently on about 7 hours of sleep. I'm 40.

If I do end up early on the weekends it feels pretty good. If I don't get up and get out early, I feel like vie wasted part of the day. I don't have a problem with that.

For me, it can be traced to my early years. I was raised on a small farm. By 7 AM the cows had all been milked and it was breakfast time.

I was thrown off my schedule for a few years at university and shift work at the 'Golden Arches', but was right back in my groove while working as a Supervisor for the dairy.

Now, the cats and dogs are fed shortly after we get up at 5:30, the horses are looked after and the wife is on her way to work by 6:35.

She needs more sleep than I do but we're usually settled down by 9 PM. Even when on vacation, we tend to rise early, make plans for the day and hit the road around the same time as the working stiffs.

Party Animals we are NOT.

I'm 60 and retired. I barely make it to Letterman every night and I'm up by 7. Nights that I have a gig, I get at least an hour nap before I leave to set up. Getting in a 3 a.m. effects me for days now.

Simple answer? Yes.

My favourite part of the day is the early morning -- I do my best work then. But it is a killer in the evening. Late shows at the theatre are highly unlikely.

The older I get the later I stay up. Not sure why but I have a hard time winding down at night. The 5:30 alarm is rough.

better/worse, it's all perspective, I can't sleep past 6AM and have come to relish the mornings, as long as you don't have to be somewhere else

It is funny how many people think of themselfs as middle age. How many people do you know that are double your age?
