Air Pistol Recommendation?

Okay, I need some recommendations for an air pistol.

There is a coyote in our neighborhood. I am a little surprised by this, we live in a high-density single-family house area with only some urban parks around. But I saw him last night, got to within 40 feet. We have cats, so I don't like it.

I want to get an air pistol to carry on my night-time walks, so that I can plug him the next time I see him. Yes, I'm aware that discharging so much as a BB gun in city limits is against the law.

Here's my thoughts:
- Needs to be accurate enough for a 6" diameter target at 50 feet. I can do that easily w/ the Glock, but have no experience w/ air pistol accuracy.
- Something inexpensive. I'm going to spray paint it blaze orange anyway.
- As quiet as possible.
- Not concerned with "killing power". I don't care what damage I do or don't do to this guy. My goal is to make him avoid my block. I might just use my paintball gun but doubt it is accurate enough.

Recommendations?

Oh, I'd consider a wrist rocket too. But I've no experience w/ one, in the last 40 years. Can I hit a 6" non-moving target at 50 feet?

(A slingshot is arguably not proscribed by our municipal code.)

You can't shoot coyotes if they are messing with your animals? Our Governor did this last year. No problem.

Just go to the local sporting goods store and buy the cheapest one they have. Maybe a CO2 powered BB firing repeater, so you can keep pumping them into his fleeing ass. Anything you buy will be accurate enough for your needs.

Hopefully none of the neighbors see you. People can be funny this way. Even pet owners, who are at risk of having their pets killed, may think this guy is "cute" or somehow "special" to have around. They may have to lose a few cats and small dogs before they cotton to your shooting him.

You realize, of course, that these things are like rats and cockroaches - if you see one, there are undoubtedly more. And shooting one with a BB gun won't dissuade the others, or likely not even him.

We get these things in our neighborhood all the time. Neighbors have lost dogs and cats to them. Even so, some of our newer neighbors would not appreciate me shooting one, so I keep a lid on it. 20 years ago, I nailed one with the .220 Swift from my front basement window, right out in the middle of the street. Every house on the street emptied to see what in the hell just happened (nothing like the bellow of a hot .22 centerfire on a quiet Saturday morning...). They all thanked me. Today, some of their replacements would call the cops. Even if I used a BB gun.

My neighborhood is private. Our land and streets are private. I am 1/1000 owner of all common land, so I can do anything that is not in violation of the HOA. There is nothing in there about killing coyotes, as long as I clean up the carcass.

a pellet pistol in .177 aint gonna kill a "yote"(the trickster). just piss him off. and if rabid then ya gots a REAL TREAT ON YER HANDS!

now a .22 cal or bigger pellet rifle if hit in head will probably kill him.

my rws .177 pistole has a kill range on wascally wabbits of maybe 35yds. comes out i think at 760 f.p.s. my rws 54 comes out at 1100 f.p.s.

99.99999999% of the time they will split when they whiff ya or see ya.

a whack in the ass with a .35 caliber solid copper BB out of a wrist rocket will generally tell them they are in no mans land.

get a spare rubber as they dont last long when used alot. cheap/quiet effective.

and NO DEAD BODIES TO HIDE!

Indeed, I think there were two out there last night. I'm hoping a .20/.22 pellet wound will at least upset him/them.

So I've basically a choice between something like

Sheridan pump air pistol .22
BENJAMIN HB22 - Pump Up Air Pistols

And something like

Wrist rocket

Tell your neighbors NOT to leave dog food outside and NOT to put food scraps in their compost. Mention the word "rabies"...

I have one of the Benjamin/Sheridan pump-up pistols in 5mm (.20 caliber). It's a great gun for the money. Kind of loud, though, as are most pump-up pneumatics.

I tried that approach, Randy. Most don't care or are too lazy. We get racoons and coyotes feeding on the neighbors' outdoor cat feeders. Actually, there's an idea...

That is NOT a repeater--it takes 3-7 pumps PER SHOT. And loads one shot at a time via a bolt action. I have one that's similar--great for target shooting but not going to cut it as a deterrent unless you're a REALLY good shot and hit the 'yote in the eyeball on the first shot.

I strongly suggest a CO2-powered mag fed pistol of some kind.

I have a Crosman and Daisy pump pistols that shoot either .177 pellets or BB's and they will both kill at close range or leave a nasty mark at longer range. I use them for pigeons, etc... They are cheap and relatively accurate.

It's also pretty easy to take out a cat feeder...

How about Aguila "Super Colibri" quiet .22 LR rounds? Supposed to be quieter than most air guns.

You know, if you shoot a gun, you're shooting a gun. Air guns are not exempt. If you want to kill it, kill it and be prepared for the consequence should they arrive.

But don't be cruel and slightly wound this animal.

I just got a Daisy 5501 Powerline CO2 airpistol a few months ago for about $65. It's a 15shot semi auto and is VERY accurate at the ranges i use it at (10yds and less). Best of all, it's made in Japan, and is very high quality (amazingly so for the price). Velocity is about 550fps with .177 BB's.

I use mine for taking out mice in the firehouse...

CAUTION: Coyotes can be extremely nasty and can and do kill people though- so i would not recommend annoying one with an air pistol that is incapable of shutting him down if he decides to attack you. Also, keep in mind they often hunt in packs. So if you hurt one, his homeys might not like it much at all.

Make sure you paint the pistol if you get a 5501, otherwise, it is indistinguishable from a real gun:

The rail mount feature is really nice too. I put a laser on mine, i can (and have) hit mice at a dead run at 5yds with it.

He has to tape the mice to the wall before he can hit them.

Sniper,
Do you remember where you bought the 5501? That looks like my next pellet gun. Welcome back, BTW...!

I got it at K-Mart for $65. It takes standard Co2 cartridges and .177 bb's only.

The rail is a standard picatinny setup, and will take virtually any light or laser setup that will fit a compact barrel. Considering that it's Japanese made, it's a real steal of a deal! I would have expected to pay double for this.

A really neat feature is that it's blowback operated. The slide cocks the hammer after each shot, and locks to the rear on the last shot fired. It also has a push button drop free magazine as well.

And of course, a manual safety.

It is a DAO type trigger mechanism, so it takes a bit of practice to get smooth with the trigger, but it's a pretty good trigger. A lot better than the DA pull on a lot of service pistols, honestly.

I'm only "back" until someone unduly annoys me. Which I suspect will not take very long.

You caught me! The hard part is catching those littler fockers by hand so i can tape them to the wall!

My 5501 has caused so many fatalities that the mice in my firehouse have taken to the walls and ceilings to move around. I can hear the little devils scurrying around at night.

Damned law of unintended consequences.

I was going to suggest the old large pump up pistol I used to have but Snipe's CO2 job is better due to size and repeatability. Three shots to the butt is far better than one. It also gives you the opportunity to miss a couple rounds. Single shot doesn't.

Good luck. We got coyotes in my neighborhood as well. Lots of "Cat Missing" signs.

Here's a picture of it. It's got a real nice two tone finish, and is all-metal construction.

The laser is a cheap-o unit that i've actually had for years. The pressure switch is good for not giving the meeses advanced notice that they're about to get eliminated. >:}

You could unload a very accurate rapid-fire fullisade on a coyote at short range with this pistol, but at just 515fps advertised velocity, there is no way you could fatally hit one unless you shot it in the eyes. Given that Coyotes can and do kill people, and often hunt in packs...be very careful.

At about 15 feet- the range that 95% of my mouse harvesting occurs at, it shoots sub dime sized groups.

PS: One REALLY nice feature to the pistol is that it holds the air in a Co2 cylinder for several weeks (at least, that' the longest i've seen so far, because i shoot the gun a lot. My girls and most visitors enjoy plinking in the basement of the firehouse with the laser).
Many Co2 bb guns will lose the charge in a couple days once you break the seal on the cylinder.
