Why bother with a rice steamer?
Seriously. I've been making it in a pan, like it says on the back of the bag. Takes the same amount of time, tastes better, and I don't have to cleanup a big sticky messy stupid extra accesory of kitchen shenanigan shyster worthless crappy appliance when I'm done.

The automatic rice cooker is among mankind's most useful inventions. I used mine tonight.

It's not practical cooking for one or two. I have one, and I usually cook rice on the stove in a pot. 2 to 1 and 20 minutes, maybe some EVOO or butter.

I have a buddy who gave me one 20 years ago when I got married. His family owned an asian import business so I guess he knows his rice cookers. It is great! I generally hate kitchen appliances but if I broke I would buy a new one the same week. Good stuff.

I can tell you for sure, without doubt, that the fuzzy logic Zojirushi steamer is THE way to cook rice. Costco.com has them dirt cheap including shipping. Worth every penny, cooks faster than stovetop, and does not burn the rice. Keeps for one or two days on low. Oh, and cleanup is a snap, seriously. Seriously great cooking device.

+1 on the Zojirushi. Rice is an inexpensive staple, brown rice is nutritious, and that is the best machine.
We....on the other hand...eat minute rice. |

random thought on rice, can anyone confirm. I understand that rice cannot/should not be reheated as it has some sort of propensity to grow bacteria....

Rice cookers make the perfect rice. My wife, on the other hand, likes to eat the burned rice with a little water on the bottom of the pot. Scrubbing that burn rice is a b#tch.

Every single Asian household owns a rice cooker. Most use the appliance every day.

Fixed it for you. We had a cooker from somewhere that sucked. We now have a Black & Decker Steamer that makes great rice (does better than making it in the pot). Good rice cookers are much better than making rice in a pot. Bad rice cookers are not as good as making rice in a pot.

Another rice question: Why does white rice vary so much in price? Our store has a entire bottom shelf with only white rice. The prices are sometimes 2x from brand to brand.
What up with tat?

When we lived in CA and made our own sushi, I would use the rice cooker to cook the sushi rice. After a few years, we learned how to make perfect rice, so we haven't used the rice cooker, but it's a good tool for beginners.

And to the OP, we have a rice cooker and use it often. I'd say that it does beat having to clean all the junk off a pan after cooking on the stovetop.
