I've been in some pretty rough Wally Marts over the years.... Try El Reno, OK at 2am... You check your 6.
I will carry quite a bit once I turn 21... I'm a small guy, and I tend to travel alone alot, and I dress well/drive nice vehicles.... I make a damn fine target I know... |
I go to Wal-Mart to shop for ammo and targets. I bought a 10/22 there once too.

Good thing I carry a compact gun most of the time.

Wilhelm, when in those big parks, I am not worried so much about people, as critters... There are some pretty viscous critters out there. If you get stranded after dark, you better find cover, and curl up with your gun.... That or become mtn lion slurry.
My parents live in the country, most weekends when I am working on things late at night in the shop I carry a gun. I am always going between buildings or out to get stuff out of a truck. I've come across more than a few skunks and other varmintin in that time.... Just drop them and go on with it... I don't have to worry about the little bastards biting me or my dogs after that... |

And don't forget the two female campers who woke up with their throats slit in Shenandoah Nat. Park in VA about 15 yrs. ago. Still unsolved too. My carry guns are no match for the kind of critters that would ever need shooting - bears. But they work well against the nutbags who live out there and run meth labs or prey upon unsuspecting hikers.

This was about 30 miles from pavement near the Coke Ovens by Superior, AZ.
http://fototime.com/FA56B8F58062EB1/standard.jpg We got lost and stuck out there after dark. We saw all kinds of ugly critter tracks while trying to find our way back to pavement. |

These gun debates are funny. To each their own, though some take it a little too far and some of what is said, is put out there to elicit a response from the other side.
I have to guns about 15' away from me, one is loaded, one is not, you figure it out... They are in a closet collecting dust. They are pretty much for shooting paper, glass, cans.... Not really for home protection. As for walking out the front door, I have no issues about not having a gun on me. I have been to the really bad parts of L.A. numerous times and only twice did I feel out of place and a bit scared and one of those times I wish I did have a gun on me, but only because I was alone, in a bad part of town late at night. During the day, I would not have felt that way. Bumped shoulders a with a gang member in Pacoima one day. He actually apologized to me. I've also traveled the West on my own, sleeping in a few rest stops. Never felt worried to be without a gun out there either. I spent a number of days last summer away from cell service, panning for gold next to some colorful types. Still never felt afraid, even though I know some of them happen to be carrying. Hell, panning for gold can get you in trouble real quick out there. Grab dirt from a spot that looks good, may actually be anothers claim and they don't take kindly to that, in fact, people still tend to get shot over claim disputes. I do take a gun when I fly x-country from time to time though and no, I don't check it, don't have to. Carry if you want to carry, Don't if you don't. I still think some of the scenarios that get thrown around here from time to time are silly though. EDIT: I forgot about all the years spent in the wilderness backpacking and staying in remote places. Never felt the need there either. |
I had a meeting a few weeks ago with a client in Seattle. During our chat it came out that she was one of the shooting victims when that nutbag shot up that Jewish center in 2006. She was shot because the nutbag was able to go room to room with no armed resistance. Her name is mentioned below.
Seattle Jewish Federation shooting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Little did she know I had a handgun in my jacket during our meeting. I didn't bring it up, but had some disgruntled former employee or other nutbag tried to do such a thing, he'd have faced armed resistance. |
OK Rick, Eric, varmint and porsche4life, et. al. I may have misunderstood the necessity of "carrying" in some situations in the "wilderness" . As I said , I am not an "outdoors" type of guy. I don't do "camping" and such. My idea of roughing it is when my cable TV is out of service for 2 hours or more. So..there you go. I will leave it at that.
Cheers all :) |
Oh, I'm never more than a few feet away from a loaded handgun when I'm watching cable tv too.
I've broken down twice in the middle of the desert in NV with no cell service. I was very relieved to have a gun with me both times. Didn't need it. But it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. |
Well one more thing actually... to Geronimo '74 who says to me "Sjeesh, troll much??"
I don't understand how anything I posted here could be referred to as "trolling". Please explain. Thanks ! |
"Oh, I'm never more than a few feet away from a loaded handgun when I'm watching cable tv too."
Somehow I believe that Rick ! :) In my case, I keep a beer and the remote close by ! |
