More computer help....DVD player is dead.

I have a Toshiba, (TSST corp) T633A player and CD burner. Pulling up the device manager gets this error message...

The unit is non functional after a reload of the opertaing system. Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

Downloading drivers from Dell is no help.

Anyone have a suggestion? This is the last non functioning component on the Laptop....was able to fix everything else.

Replace the drive.

Are there any other devices in Device Manager that show as "disabled?" or show up with a "!" on them? A DVD drive is a child device and relies on a parent to connect it. While the drive could be dead, it could also just have a parent driver that's not installed.

I've disabled and enabled it.....it was working fine prior to the O/S reload. I also lost the program for playing DVDs. It was Media Direct which was always buggy with VLC.

I've used VLC before. Decent program.

Anyways, there is an exclamation mark in yellow showing that it is corrupted.

My shotgun attempt that worked with my Bluetooth didn't work here. Auto searching for a solution doesn't work. A Google looking for other postings on how to get a corrupted drive working again is no good.

I CAN run discs for uploading software....but not DVD/movies.

You can try this:
Step 1: Start Registry Editor
type "regedit" in the Start Run box.
Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry

1. In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
2. Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
3. Expand Control, and then expand Class.
4. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
5. In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only.
* If you see the UpperFilters registry entry in the details pane of Registry Editor, go to step 6.
* If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the
LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to "Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry."
6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
7. Click Yes when you receive the following message:
Are you sure you want to delete this value?

The UpperFilters registry entry is removed.
Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry

1. In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click LowerFilters.

Note You might see a LowerFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click LowerFilters only.

If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content is unable to help you any more. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.
2. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
3. Click Yes when you receive the following message:
Are you sure you want to delete this value?
The LowerFilters registry entry is removed.
4. Exit Registry Editor.

Step 4: Restart your computer

Do so at your own risk. though I have done this many times and in certain cases it does work.

My DVD burner in my 3 year old Dell Inspiron 530 died last weekend and I replaced it for $40. Easy fix...

Though, if it's a corrupt low level driver, a new drive ain't going to fix it. Nice to have extra parts to test with.

The Toshiba drive is a laptop drive. You can find them in Dell's.

The DVD player is now up and running. I know that people like to run Microsoft down......but while futzing with the SLODave data, MS called and dragged me along the path and fixed it. Zero dollar tech help is a nice thing.

Now...the biometric fingerprint reader is the last screwed up piece of hardware.
