+1. (Rules are rules!)

It all depends on where you connect the 2: is it connected to the 48, or the (9+3).

So -- is it:

(48 ÷ 2) * (9+3) or 48 ÷ (2*(9+3)) ??

Order of operations comes into play here.

Also -- if one rewrites the expression, substituting " ÷ 2 " with "* 0.5" the answer seems clear to me:
48 * 0.5 * (9+3)

-Z-man.

IMHO, the answer is 288.

This demonstrates why the ÷ is never used in actual mathematics.

I also say 288 - b/c the order of operators is the same for any associative operators; therefore, work left to right

I forgot about the left to right rule. 288
(I wonder if it would be 2 in Israel since Hebrew is written right to left?)

48÷2(9+3) = ????

I gots 48 eggs.

I'm gonna divide 'em by a number.

What number, you ask?

Why that number is 2(9 + 3).

Anybody disagree that 2(9 + 3)=24?

If yes, return to 8th grade Beginning Algebra.

Anybody disagree that 48 divided by 24 is 2?

If yes, return to 3rd grade.

Sheesh.

Well, I voted for 288 early on and without looking then felt like an idiot when I read the early results.

I'm a poli sci major so I'm used to being bad at math but I'm also a contractor who has solved many real world math problems. Now I'm just curious.

This reminds me of the argument I had with son's 3rd grade teacher a long while back. She argued that 1+2x3 = 9 instead of 7. In fact, I had an entire roomful of elementary-school teachers argue that it was 9. This partially explains why students have so much trouble with basic algegra and why science and engineering education in this country has gone to $*&@!....

Order of operations.

Multiplication and division are evaluated left-to-right.

Hence, 288.

It is funny that the ones most insistent they are right, and insulting about it are the ones who have it wrong.

48÷2(9+3) Start
Step one, Perenthesis, gives us:
48÷2(12)
Next step, Exponents. None of those, so we move on to Multiplication and Division, going left to right.
48÷2 = 24, leaving us
24(12)
24*12 = 288

We will ignore AS because we are done.

And if you don't believe me: http://tinyurl.com/3qw3ko6

The only way the answer is 2 is if you drove to it in a well sorted 944.
