Frankly, one of the comments on that link really nailed it:

I hate this. No self respecting mathematician would ever write something like this, it’d either be (48/2)*(9+3) or 48/(2(9+3)) depending on what they were trying to do. There is no “right” answer because the problem should not be written that way in the first place. Instead of programming it one way or the other into a given system, it should return an error instead, telling you to stop being so stupid.

Answer is thus 288...

The "trick" here is that the term 2(9+3) is meant to lead people to do this operation first, when in fact if it were written 2 X (9+3) it would be more obvious that the answer should be 288.

I can't seem to get WolframAlpha to do it again, but the first time I entered the equation as posted here, it converted it to the extra set of parentheses and gave the answer 2 (the first screen shot above). The second time I entered it, it didn't and gave the answer 288. Interesting, no?

(48÷2)(9+3) = 288.

and:

48÷(2(9+3)) = 2.

If those two answers are accepted by all, then by applying the order of operations rule, specifically the do multiplicdation/division from left to right, it can be inferred that:

48÷2(9+3) = (48÷2)(9+3)

Thus the correct answer is 288.
