Of course! You've read my PARF posts!

The correct answer is 288.

This is a 'gotcha' equation because it's easy to think you're done with the () when you've added 9 + 3...but you know how smug and arrogant us commie *******s can be when we're disinformationing.

It's a poorly written problem.

Frankly, one of the comments on that link really nailed it:

I hate this. No self respecting mathematician would ever write something like this, it’d either be (48/2)*(9+3) or 48/(2(9+3)) depending on what they were trying to do. There is no “right” answer because the problem should not be written that way in the first place. Instead of programming it one way or the other into a given system, it should return an error instead, telling you to stop being so stupid.

parentheses first
exponents
multiplication or division -- left to right
addition or subtraction left to right

Answer is thus 288...

The "trick" here is that the term 2(9+3) is meant to lead people to do this operation first, when in fact if it were written 2 X (9+3) it would be more obvious that the answer should be 288.

Yeah; thus the not far from 50/50 split in the poll.

Fun though.

First one with the extra set of parentheses is a different notation than what the OP said, and yields a different outcome imo, no?

Yeah - that's what makes it fun.

From the link originally posted by Mark Henry
48÷2(9+3) = ? | Know Your Meme:

"48÷2(9+3) = ? is a math problem that, depending on the order of operations used, leads to two different answers: 2 and 288. What is the correct answer is currently a hot topic for debate, and is sometimes used to troll other users because of the argument that can result afterward"

I can't seem to get WolframAlpha to do it again, but the first time I entered the equation as posted here, it converted it to the extra set of parentheses and gave the answer 2 (the first screen shot above). The second time I entered it, it didn't and gave the answer 288. Interesting, no?

Somehow this is related to how the IRS figures my taxes. I say I own $2 they say I owe $288.

Three men walk into a hotel and ask for a room for the night.
The clerks says: "Rooms are $10 per night - per occupant." They each give him $10.

Later, his boss (looking at the days receipts) tells him, "You forgot our Tuesday Special Rate. Those men's room should have only been twenty five dollars." He hands the clerk a five dollar bill and says, "Take them this."

The simple-minded cleck, as he's walking to their room, ponders the delima of dividing five dollars between three men? To simplify his problem, he puts the Five in his pocket and takes out three ones. At the room he gives each man a dollar.

Three times nine = $27
The clerk kept $2
Total = $29

What happened to the other dollar?

I think we can agree that:

(48÷2)(9+3) = 288.

and:

48÷(2(9+3)) = 2.

If those two answers are accepted by all, then by applying the order of operations rule, specifically the do multiplicdation/division from left to right, it can be inferred that:

48÷2(9+3) = (48÷2)(9+3)

Thus the correct answer is 288.
