Ok, This is my first post in this forum...usually only stay in the 930 section.
I am a Crown Royal drinker. I like the regualr and really like the new Black that they came out with. I have not tried the SV or the Cask#11 yet. I am not a heavy drinker.... maybe once a week or so. I just want to try something new, but dont want to spend a crap load of money on something that I will throw away after the first sip.

Was thinking about possibly getting into scotch.... Any suggestions??

If you like Canadian whiskey, try Wiser's Very Old.
Kind of pricey, but very nice.

"Scotch" is all over the map. Everyone's tastes are different - one man's "nectar of the gods" is another man's driveway cleaner. This is like trying to answer the young man's question as he enters puberty - "dad, I'm starting to notice girls - what would you recommend?" Other than "run, Forest, run...", there is no "right" answer.

Scotch varies a great deal in what we call "peatiness". It is, by law, filtered and strained through - local peat moss. Some of it really retains a great deal of this "flavor". Lagavulin, Laphroig, and others are known for this quality. They are kind of the "graduate school" scotches. Coming from a background of smooth, delicate whiskey like Crown Royal, these might be a bit much at first.

"Milder" scotches, with a less peaty flavor, would be ones like Craggamore, Oban, Glen Livet, and such. "Inbetweeners" would be mildly peaty brands like Talisker, Balvinnie, and the like.

One of the best things to do is to seek out a local "scotch bar". One that has a good variety that you can sample by the glass. It's kind of spendy this way, with some of the better stuff bouncing off of $40/shot, but it's well worth it to "explore" without springing for a whole fifth of driveway cleaner.

So, what is "a crap load of money" to a 930 driver? Good scotch can be had for $50 a bottle. The sky is the limit from there, although once you top the $100 mark, you are probably just showing off. a bit more than Crown Royal, no doubt, but well worth it when you find one you like.

My personal favorites tend towards the "peaty" side. In order of "peatiness": Laphroig, Lagavulin, and Talisker. I'm enjoying a glass of Talisker right now...

If you want to get your feet wet with Scotch, and you like Crown, I would start with a blended scotch, and it is really hard to go wrong with Johnny Walker Black. Yes, there are certainly better scotches out there, but Black is pretty good and not ridiculously expensive.

If you want to try a single malt, Glenlivet is not a bad place to start. Readily available, in a wide price range, from about $30 for the 12 year old up to ~$130 for the 21 year old.

Once you start in to single malts, it is not that much different from wine.

Asking "what is a good single malt" is like asking "what is a good red wine".

I'm not much of a scotch drinker. When I drink socially it's a martini, beer, or wine depending on who I'm with. But I like to keep a bottle of 12 yr Macallan around because sometimes sitting in a dark room with just a short glass of scotch and your thoughts is the right thing to do. I haven't tested it against a lot of others because I know I like it and don't find this something to be adventurous about. Someone gave me a bottle of 18yr Macallan once and I didn't find it that much better than the 12 yr stuff.

Despite all the different flavors and packaging, remember that the finest scotch, the finest wine, the finest bourbon or blended Canadian...

They are all JUST BOOZE!

my rule of thumb for boozing


clear liquor to keep you doing the jungle dance .
amber to chill the nerves and enter cool mode
Beer if there's plenty of sun or you need a nap great if there's codine cough syrope around
White vino, if it's a reception and it's free
red vino, for only for din-din (personally won't touch the stuff except to make coq-au-vin)
champagne, only if it's the good stuff , Krug.
cocktails, yes please.. but only the classics, singapore sling, mai thai, bloody Mary, stuff like that No friggin umbrella's or premix crapola.
Other then that, if it delivers a good buzz, gimme and make sure you don't run out.

Glenlivet 12yo is a good start ina single malt/can get at most bars. My current fav is MacAllan 12yo.
For something completely different,Absinthe (Lucid) is back....
Or,settle back with a pitcher of Manhattans.
