Hornswaggled for $22 clams...
I aswer the door to find a young girl, maybe 15 or so with a candle in her hand...
"Sir, I from Marcus HS Cheerleaders and we are selling these candles to raise money for our competitions this year. I have only two left to sell. They are twenty two dollars" "How much? Twenty two dollars for a candle?" "Yes sir, its a fund raiser." Hmmm. Well while twenty two bucks for a candle is plain nuts the girl was legit I guess. She gave me this little pout and she had great big eyes and would just blink at me. "Hmmm...twenty two dollars huh...do ya takes checks?" "Yes sir!" I have the darn thing burning now. It doesn't really smell all that good and the chances of this thing exploding and catching my house on fire is prolly an even bet but I did make a young cheerleader happy at the expense of $22. My wife is gonna shyt...

I was going to say, "this thread is worthless....". But you'll have to change you story to her being a college cheerleader for that.

Thanks for the heads up Mike. Means they'll probably be hitting my hood tomorrow.
I'll spring for the $10 coupon books or the poinsettias at Xmas time but $22 for a candle? Rather give em $5 and let em fart in the foyer. |

Careful of out of town kids claiming to be local to sell crap. Last time a kid claimed to live around the corner I asked him what the zip code was here. He got defensive and started yelling at me. Hey, chill dude. You're the one lying to me. Run along before I call the cops.

In many towns I agree. This place actually has a high legit factor. I made out the check to 'Marcus HS Cheerleader Boosters'. The teams, band and cheersquads are pretty notorious for going d2d in our hood. Out of 168 homes, 120 have kids from 1-21 the rest have kids in college age or grand kids. If I asked what her last name was (which actually wouldn't be as creepy as it sounds) chances are I may know her Mom or Dad. Its a town of 14,000, over 85% are families.
Ask Stomachmonkey, walk into Walmart, Lowes or Target and chances are you will see at least two different people you know. The chances increase according to you and your childs involvement in school, sports, arts or scouts...

Los Angeles requires a permit from d2d and street solicitors for any cause. 99% of organizations don't bother. Requesting to see it serves as a good filter.

StoMo is spot on with his observation. Around here it is "Anglo and Attractive...All Others Need Not Apply". Pretty whitebread in these har parts. Outsiders stick out quickly.

When I worked at our state labor department, we sometimes had trouble with people who would use kids to sell d2d to make a profit. Usually it was candy and the sales pitch was some legit-sounding charity. One guy who repeatedly did this was actually a schoolteacher. He would load them all up in his van, drop them off in various residential locations and pick them up later. Late at night. He managed to evade justice for a bit, but the jig was up when we coordinated with the local police. They were very happy to assist in getting this MF off the streets. He went up the river.
