So, I was on my way to a pawn shop looking for a good used Dewalt 18v drill (I really don't want to pay $300 for one new)
I roll up and see a guy laying on the ground and another guy screaming on his phone with a few more rushing over. It was a middle aged guy, in a suit, behind a Lexus so my first thought was that he'd had a heart attack...........then I saw the blood and the gun in his trunk. I have a decent first aid kit in the car and did what I could. The ambulance took what seemed like a solid eternity to show up and he was still hanging on when the left for the hospital.

I need a scotch.

So what is the story? Accidental shooting while getting the gun out of the trunk?
The time spent waiting for the ambulance seems to take an eternity!

Looks like an accident. I never really inspected the gun as I didn't want to touch it, but it looked different. I've been googling pictures and I think that the safety had been altered, maybe.in a manner to allow firing without a magazine.
the weird thing is that the cops couldn't find his ID anywhere. This could turn out very poorly for the pawn shop.

Didn't see a recent post about Bosch. I've heard good and bad, certainly the price is a lot nicer.

I need a cordless drill too and plan on checking out a pawn shop first. So it sounds like I should look for 18V, either Makita or Bosch?

The makita will hold up better in the long run, but will also cost more. If you aren't using it hardcore all the time you should be alright...

The shop I work in has to use Makitas, we use them 3-4 days a week. Even the best drill only last ~2yrs...

Cool. I'd mostly probably use it just to run wood screws. I do a lot of home renovation but it's not a full time job.

I've been holding out for a long time with a corded drill to make the holes, but everything has been screwed in by hand with a ratcheting screwdriver. I helped a friend out this weekend and he had a cordless. It only took running a few screws for me to be sold on getting one.

If it doesn't already come with one, get a spare battery too. That way you always have a fully charged one when you need it. Trust me, someday you will need it.

Dewalt is as much image as substance, my father in law is a contractor and doesn't like his Dewalt stuff but is too heavily invested to change brands. I have a 9 year old 18V Milwalkee that I purchased as a contractor, it still works great despite heavy use but I have had to replace the batteries once. For light residencial use check out Craftsman, Hitachi, or Ryobi, they're cheap and good enough for light duty around the house.

Hitachi is one I've also looked at. Lowes has the 18v for $120 or somewhere in that neighborhood.

I'm still a little freaked out and well into my third scotch. People mocked me for having a full combat medic first aid kit in my truck, guess I look pretty smart now.

One of the construction workers saw it happen and is pretty sure it was just an accident. Gun in the hands of someone who didn't care enough to properly educate themselves.

What were you able to do for the poor chap? This is awful. And to think that maybe he brought the gun to pawn because he was low on money.

He bought the gun there, I know that.
All I could really do was get a chest seal on it and administer cpr. He was alive when he left and had a pulse. This was only a half mile or so from the hospital so he had a pretty good chance. I'm sure I'll be hearing from the officer, I intend to ask how he is when that happens.

A 63-year-old man died today after he apparently accidentally shot himself outside a Hilton Head Island pawn shop, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

William G. Brannon of Hilton Head Island was pronounced dead this afternoon at Hilton Head Hospital, according to county Deputy Coroner David Ott. An autopsy will be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina, he said.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a gunshot victim at about 11:21 a.m. at Top Dollar Pawn, 11 Mathews Drive, Ott said.

A man had come into the pawn shop and told employees he wanted to pawn a gun, said Sgt. Robin McIntosh, Sheriff’s Office spokesman. He said he would go to his car to retrieve the gun.

Soon after, employees heard a gunshot and the man yell, McIntosh said. They ran to the parking lot to find him lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest, she said.

They called 911. Brannon died at 1:25 p.m. at Hilton Head Hospital, Ott said.

McIntosh said it appears he might have accidentally shot himself when trying to unload the weapon, a 9-mm semiautomatic handgun.

The investigation continues, she said.
