What does it take to shoot down such a helicopter? Rifle? RPG?

A lucky high caliber rifle shot could conceivably do it (e.g. to the tail rotor housing), and an RPG could certainly do it. Early reports were that an RPG took down the chopper, but that is no longer believed to be accurate. It was a brush with a wall leading to a hard landing.

Little more than harsh language in the exact wrong spot will take down a helo.

The Seals did the best they could. Regrettably once you have equipment like this in the field it really is on a matter of time before the enemy gets their hands on it.

Exactly.

If there were two "spare" helos circling around why didn't one of them land to pick up the rest of the occupants as was supposedly the original plan? something just doesnt seem to add up with respect to that part of the story.

It will all come out eventually. There will be movies made about this mission. It might be the most famous SPECOPS mission in US history.

TOO FUNNY and TOO TRUE! one lucky "GOLDEN BB" into the intake or rotors at the exact pico second is ALL IT TAKES!

now considering the RPM(rounds per minute) of most modern small arms, NOT INCLUDING SPECIFICALLY MADE AA(anti aircraft) weapons...........................it aint FUN being in a helo and being shot at.

if you have noticed recently due to iraq and afghan, pilots.co-dawgs, are now being fitted with not only bulletproof seats but side bulletproof composite panels almost up to their necks.

And as is feared in this case, Chinese agents recovered some of the wreckage of that F-117. Legend has it that's why we "accidentally" bombed their embassy in Sarajevo soon thereafter. They were storing the wreckage there. They have plenty of engineers working in Pakistan too. I know one of them.

you'd assume that the benefits of a good operation outcome were weighed against the risks, incl. loss of any secrets (which are all temporary anyway, if you think about it) -- I'd be more concerned about the nav. & radar equip than a tail boom and rotor with hubcap

Pakis loaded up a bunch of wreckage into trucks - did they give it back to us? if so, what did they do first? if not, where is it now?

VC used crossbows made of top rotors from downed US helos to shoot down more helos

you've got a radar sig. just with the refuel boom

dhoward 05-05-2011 10:42 AM

That's why speculation is that the boom isn't fitted on the low-signature version. There are other low-signature 'snap-ons' as well. There was also speculation that anti-reflective windshield coating might have caused unintended night-vision attenuation, leading to the hard landing.

see! i told ya all THEY WAZ "BLACK" and HAD NO VIZUAL(visual) MARKINGS!

and you all laughed when alot of us had our TIN FOIL HELMETS READY!

In the right spot, deep penetrating 9mm bullets will put down most helicopters.

They are pretty fragile (it must be Italian!) things.

Nice gun! ;)

I would guess no. I'd buy one if they did.
