Angry CA Registration fees are seriously ridiculous

I was rummaging around through my 2000 996 earlier today and came upon my Registration, which I found I had let expire! Woops! Total accident. So, when I got home I looked for and found the renewal notice. $280. OK, bad enough. But, because I'm a month late, it's popped up to $467!! Are you freaking kidding me?! For registration?!

I'm sick of the freaking fees and taxes this state takes from me!

Vote with your feet. It is the only way. The state does not look like it will change.

Wow, that is amazing, almost 300 for a registration. I guess I will cheerfully pay the 55.30 love letter from the state of texas for mine.

I can only imagine a fee that low in my wildest dreams. Good for you.

CA Registration fees are seriously ridiculous

It cost me 21 bucks a year to get a new tag for my cars. They even mail me a notice. My wife's much newer car is about 80 bucks and it drops every year.

I think my cost was $50 or so. While I miss some things about CA the out-of-control punishment of the normal working-class people there certainly isn't one of them.

Voted with my feet. Glad I did. CA is circling the drain and will soon end up right in the septic tank along with Mexico. It's a tragedy of epic proportions seeing what a place with CA's potential has been left to turn into...

BTW, as an aside, my wife missed her registration. It was due in November and I noticed it in April! A the county DMV, they hand you a sheet when this happens and ask you if you were given a citation and was the vehicle used during the time.

I asked the person, what is the penalty for telling the truth? She said that they issue the sticker for 12 months if you haven't been using it. If you have, they issue you a sticker for the remaining time on the registration, in our case good to November

No extra charges. They just want the money. And yeah, something like $55.

Try living in GA where you have to pay ad-valorem tax based on the value of the vehicle every year. Tags are about $35 but the additional taxes are huge, my 930 is still about $300 a year, my wife's Nissan is $260, my BMW is around $200.

People that own new exotics literally pay thousands every year to register their cars.

Our vehicle licensing tax ain't cheap at all, but my 993 is old enough that it doesn't sting too much anymore. New cars are killers though, since it's based on purchase price and then a declining value. But for that my property taxes are $1400 a year. The same house in NJ would be probably 5-8x as much. In VA it'd be 3-4x as much.

Three times in Washington State, there has been an initiative to cap registration fees at $30.

It has passed overwhelmingly all three times. The fees drop to $30, but before long, other items are "tacked on" so that the actual cost of registration keeps going back up.

After three times, you'd think the message would be received. Guess the folks in the state capital are a bit dense.

It's to pay the salaries of the "Baywatch" lifeguards...

the amount we paid to register our MINI in AZ for two years would've paid for 3/4 of a year's worth of registration in CA...so glad we left!

Yep late fees totally suck. I too this year missed the registration due date on my wife's car...by two days. I plead my case to the lady on the phone and lucked out to only pay the original fee.

Look at it this way. How much do the folks in TX and AZ pay for air conditioning each year? Sorta makes your extra $200 fee trivial...plus you get to enjoy the mountains, desert, and beach all from the same residence. Perspective!

I suppose so, David, but Jeez. Between my wife and I, we do fine in terms of income - and it's still tough. What the heck do individuals and families in this state who have a low income do?

Just FYI, you don't need a shop to sign anything to register a vehicle non-op.

A lot less than the difference in the monthly housing payments...

Yes but then we're back to the Mountains, Desert, Ocean thing again. Happy to hear you love your home James...we all need that basic. I will continue to pay more money to live here...I will be selfish that way. LOL.

I feel your pain, Scott. But in the end, no matter where you live, the taxes are going to be about the same. Well, to a certain degree, at least. In MA, I found the annual registration fees to be pretty cheap. $35 or something paltry like that. But the annual "excise tax" would make up the differece, costing a couple hundred bucks per vehicle. Here in CA there's no excise tax, but the registration costs a couple hundred bucks ($250-300). Call it what you will, it comes out to be about the same.
